Screaming : A Short Story

by - Tuesday, June 05, 2012

Hi everyone!

It has come to the day for another round of short stories, and I have once again asked my good friend, AJ to be a guest on my blog, and once again, she has surprised me with her talent with words. I don't know if short stories just appeal to me or her story is just that good. Any how, I proudly present to you...

Screaming: A Short Story

I walked along the dark corridors, fumbling for a light switch. What crappy timing for my flashlight to die on me.

"Colton!" I whispered. "Have you found any lights yet?"

"If I did, don't you think they'd be on by now, Uri?" he snapped.

I rolled my eyes. What in holy hell was his problem? It's not like I wanted to be locked up in an old abandoned high school any more than he did. Especially not with a psycho murderer on the loose.

"The Hangman" they called him. He would turn his victims virtually inside out and hang them by their intestines. You wouldn't even know someone was dead until they turned up five days later, mutilated at the top of a tree. I shivered just thinking about it.

I continued to walk along absentmindedly until I ran into someone. I screamed.

"Shut up Uriana!" Colton reprimanded, clapping a hand over my mouth to get me to quiet down.

I breathed a sigh of relief. "God! You about scared me half to death."

"Well if you would watch where you were going," he argued.

"I wouldn't have to if someone could find the damn light switch!" I retorted.

He sighed in frustration, a sound almost like a growl, and grabbed my hand. "There," he said. "Now keep up."

For a while, we walked in silence, running our hands up and down the tiled walls.

"Who's to say these lights will work, anyway?" I wondered aloud. "The school is like, centuries old."

Then my feet slipped, sending me flailing until I landed flat on my back.

"What the hell was that?" Colton asked, removing his hand from mine to touch his forehead.

"I don't know, I slipped on something," I answered.

"Well, what'd you slip on then?"

"If I knew, I wouldn't've referred to it as 'something'." I ran my hand along the floor, encountering a goopy, wet mess. What the hell? I thought.

Something warm fell on my head. I looked up, trying to find the source, and two more drops landed right on my forehead.

Suddenly, the lights flickered on and I screamed at the sight before me.

A mangled body sat hanging in the rafters, and the substance that I had slipped in was blood. Realizing that the dripping liquid that had fallen on my head earlier was also blood, I scrambled to my feet, pulling Colton up with me.

"Come on, we have to go," I whispered, running down the hall.

"What the fuck was that?!" he shouted. "Was that a...?" he trailed off.

"Shh!" I shushed him. A strange creaking noise echoed throughout the hall, catching my attention. "Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?" he asked.

"That creaking sound."

He cocked his head to the side, listening. Unfortunately, the only thing that could be heard next was him being forced out of my grip.

"Colton!" I yelled, whipping around.

My eyes widened when I saw him, a shadowy figure holding him at the throat with a knife poised at his jugular. The man slashed through Colton's throat, smiling menacingly at me.

I wanted so badly to run back to him, to see if I could somehow save my best friend, but I'd seen more than enough horror movies to know that pulling that stunt would most likely get me killed. So I ran as fast as I could away from the cloaked man.

It wasn't long before I slipped over my own two feet, twisting my ankle in the process. Too weak and hurt to walk, I got and my hands and knees and started crawling away, tears blurring my vision.

"NO!" I screamed as hands clasped around my ankles, dragging me backwards.

THE END.

Honestly, I was a bit creep out by that last part, and I can't imagine what my reaction would be if I witness my best friend's death.
