Saven Disclosure (Saven #2)
Author: Siobhan Davis
Genre: Dystopia, Science Fiction, YA
Published Date: April 21st 2016

THE TRUTH CAN'T HIDE FOREVER

To protect Logan, I have no choice but to deceive him.
But I’m not the only one hiding the truth.
Will our love survive all the secrets and lies?

Enemy alien ships crowd the skies over Earth while the world waits with bated breath. The Saven have been exposed, and where once they were abhorred, they are now championed as our greatest ally and our only possible savior.

Logan and Sadie have been separated, and the longer he is gone, the more their love is tested by duty, doubts, and deception.

Sadie and Jarod have infiltrated the highest levels of government, but they are playing a dangerous game. Surrounded by people with conflicting agendas—hell-bent on using her for their own aim—Sadie is confused when the lines between good and evil are blurred. It’s impossible to tell friend from foe, and no one can be trusted.

When the full extent of the experiments taking place in Sector Twenty is disclosed, Sadie can no longer sit back and watch as the lower classes face a horrific fate. Racing to save her loved ones and mankind, she risks her own safety and the love she’s waited a lifetime for to do the right thing.

But no one thought to save her from herself.

Title: Killer Potential
Author: After Brook Szymanski
Publisher: BookFish Books
Genre: YA Psychological Thriller
Release Date: July 17, 2016

Seventeen-year-old Yvette Gibbs was just admitted to the hospital psych unit in handcuffs as the main suspect in a murder case, which she refuses to talk about.

Drugs and depression claim her family—leaving Yvette to fight her own demons alone. Adopting the skill of master of passive-aggressive vengeance lands Yvette in the psych unit with no family support, unless she cooperates with her therapist to clear her name, also a convicted murderer.

Yvette wants revenge on the world that taught her to be afraid, claimed her mother to depression, hid her father in a fog of job hopping, turned her brother to dealing drugs, and swallowed her sister whole, but to achieve this she must lie, manipulate, and most of all survive. Pitting her dead sister’s shady friend whom she fears against the man who reminded her she’s not immune to victimization, is her perfect solution to all life's hassles, even if that means she ends up with blood on her hands. Until everything backfires.

I received an ARC from BookFish Books in exchange for an honest review.

I don't even know where to start, it has so much potential, yet it could have been so much more.

If you are looking for a happy ending, consider yourself warned, you are in for an intense, depressing ride. The hauntingly amazing cover pulled me in right away and the story was off to a good start. Killer Potential was written in dual time frame, alternating between "the past" and the "present" as told from Yvette's perspective. In "the past", Yvette was portrayed as a young girl learning her ways in the real world. In "the present", the setting was switched to a psychiatric ward where Yvette was admitted into under a murder conviction Despite the constant alternation between the dual time frame, I thought the idea was brilliant! The story does not feel lacking, development wise.

Killer Potential explored themes that the society considered as taboo, from drug abuse, suicide tendencies, pedophilia and peer pressure, the author delved into the unspeakable through the eyes of a young Yvette, and how she handled herself in such situations. This book was everything the blurb promises it to be!

As much as I love the element of the story (for a moment I had an AHS - American Horror Story flashback), I often felt myself emotionally disconnected from Yvette, in which I find rather disheartening. Don't get me wrong, Yvette is a great character, however I am disappointed that I could not find myself bonding with her character as much as I wanted to. Perhaps it was her erratic thoughts, or her unique personality, she is definitely a complex character that I need more time to get to know her more.

I'll definitely re-read the book in hopes of understanding Yvette better (because honestly, who suffers through all that and survives?), as for now my thoughts for the book are dark, depressing and beautifully crafted. I will leave it at that!

Aften Brook Szymanski, at the age of five, once fell on her bum looking out a large picture window while eating a pickle and people laughed. She thought she was funny, life has never been the same. She’s obsessed with LEGOs, cozy reading nooks, and over-the-knee socks. A graduate of the College of Southern Idaho with an Associate of Arts degree, Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree, and the University of Utah with a Master of Education degree. Learning is more fun than testing, sometimes we have to endure both.

She lives in a very cold Wyoming valley with her husband, three kids, and one unhappy cat, where they are being cryogenically preserved for all time—thanks to how cold it is.

Hi there my favourite peeps!

It has been a long while since I posted about anything personal and I just wanted to take this opportunity to ramble about a few updates of my life!

I haven't been actively posting any reviews on my blog or on GR (that's because my reading goal for this year is only 30 books, a shame I know :( ), but I'm all about having realistic resolutions this year and this is one way of achieving it!

Nevertheless, I completed my 6 month long internship in a pastry supplier company. Although it was just an internship, my days were fully occupied and I had such a wonderful experience working there - not to mention TONS of dessert surrounding me 24/7, that must have explained the sudden increase in my weight.

But because of my internship, I hardly had any time to blog and participate in any weekly memes (bummer!), and I had stopped posting for my blog's feature "Author/Blogger of the Month" posts since March (double bummer!). I really am disappointed in myself for not being able to sustain my blog, but I do occasionally join in blog tours in helping authors to promote their newest release, I guess by doing so, it gave me a feeling that I still have a place in the blogosphere. You guys are too awesome I never contemplated to ever leave - at least permanently :P

So what am I up to right now?

I'm back home, helping my parents out with their business so I can learn a few ropes and figure out what I wanted to do with life. Graduation is not until November and I have to wait a few months before I could use my transcript for job applications (nah, I'm just using that as an excuse to stay home and avoid being an adult :p)

I'm slowly getting back on track with my reading and I knew that by being at home, I would have more time to read (yay for that!). Annnd, since my parents knew how much of a book hoarder I am, my dad converted my cupboard into a bookshelf for my books - although I do not understand why he thought that the tiny shelf could fit all of my prized collections, pssttt. :P I'm joking, I love you dad!

My awesome new DIY shelf!
He also took his amateur carpentry skills and made me a dressing table, which I really love. Seriously dad, we should start a business, hahaha!

Enough about myself, I haven't heard from you for a while, so how's life? :D

Chapter 1

A strong warm breeze blew dust past a patrol truck as it stopped shy of the white wooden frame house. With the heat of the summer, the grass in the yard had burned leaving only a dry vegetation that was more vulnerable to fire than kindling. Lawson sat behind the wheel of the truck stopped in the dirt and gravel drive that led to the house. The picket railing that lined the porch was half painted, a project he had let go only a few days ago.

Lawson’s hands gripped the steering wheel, turning his knuckles white before he let go, allowing them to drop to his lap. A border patrol badge hanging from his rearview mirror threw a spark of sunlight in his eyes, causing him to take a deep breath as he glanced down at a picture of him and his best friend that was shoved in the dash, hiding part of his gauges.

Another strong wind blew against his truck, causing a cloud of dust to form from his driveway. It was a tell-tale sign that fall was soon approaching, not that the temperatures dropped in Presidio, Texas, but a sure sign of high school football and the Friday night lights that came with the favorite sport—something Lawson enjoyed doing on the weekends, watching West Texas Football at its finest, and this year the Blue Devils were predicted to go deep into the playoffs.

Lawson Caine was a fifth-generation lawman who had moved to the small town of Presidio after joining the United States Border Patrol, a dream he had since his high school days. A border patrol agent had visited and made a presentation on the agency and the training that came with the job. Lawson was hooked.

The Caine family had lived in Paris, Texas, since the early 1800s, and Lawson was the great-great-grandson of the famous Bill Caine, a U.S. Deputy Marshal. Bill was commissioned in the Southern District of Indian territory in Paris, Texas. He was shot and killed in 1893 while attempting to arrest Bud English, a prominent stockman. Caine was riding with a posse tracking a gang of horse thieves when a gunfight broke out, leaving him lying dead beside his trusted horse. Years later, one of the posse members recognized Bud English in the streets of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and had him arrested, nine years after the death of Bill.

Since then, the Caine family had gained the respect from the townspeople of Paris and become the trusted lawmen that followed their reputation. Lawson’s dad and two uncles all worked for the sheriff department and headed up the mounted patrol. Dave, Lawson’s father, was a talented calf roper and had the buckles and trophy saddles to show for it. Lawson, however, had football fever and lived every waking moment with a football in hand. He knew that his football career would end with his high school days, and after walking off the field his senior year, he placed his attention on the US Border Patrol.

Lawson found himself in Artesia, New Mexico, at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center 14 months after graduation, getting the life kicked out of him at Border Patrol training. He thought two-a-days football practice in the summer was tough, but it was not even close to this. Still, with a strong background in Spanish and being in the best shape of his life, he managed the 19 weeks of hell and was assigned to the Marfa Sector, now the Big Bend Sector, with the United States Border Patrol.

After meeting with the Chief Patrol Agent, Lawson was placed on a team located in the station at Presidio, Texas, a team headed up by Deputy Patrol Agent James D. Garrett, a former Captain with the Texas Rangers who preferred to be called “Captain,” but all the men under him adopted him as “Cap.”

Cap and Lawson hit it off immediately, both having ties to Paris, Texas. Cap was a distant relative of the famous lawman Buck Garrett, the nephew of the infamous Pat Garrett who killed Billy the Kid. Buck Garrett was born in Tennessee and had moved his family to Paris in the late 1800s with his two brothers.

Cap was often given young rookies fresh out of the academy to train them up and send them to other stations and sectors, but Lawson and a few other young men had decided to stay with Cap. They loved his non-managing attitude and slow pace to life. His theory was there was no rush to get to the grave.

Now, eight years after moving to West Texas to join the agency, Lawson was sitting in his driveway in Presidio, Texas, wondering how he got to the stage of life he was now sitting in. He took another deep breath and reflected back to the last two years.

Well, I am a husband and father. We always have a house full of teens and college students, mostly Young Life kids. I love the outdoors, hiking, kayaking, stand up paddling, fishing, you know "man stuff" but I'm a sucker for chick flicks. I wrote Fields of Alicia, Waterproof, Across Borders, and the series Micah and have several other novels finished and in the making. And yes I am a raccoon lover, check out Tucker on my social media.
