ADAMANT final front cover

Adamant (The Alliance Series #1)
By Emma L. Adams
Genre: Contemporary Fantasy
Age category: Adult
Release Date: 11 March 2015

On an alternative 21st-century Earth in which our world is one of many in the Multiverse, the Inter-World Alliance exists to keep the peace between the worlds, and keep the monsters out.

Ada Fletcher is twenty-one, keeps a collection of knives in her room, and is more interested in fighting than her day job as a cashier. She also risks her life on a daily basis, helping refugees from a devastating magical war on her homeworld hide on the low-magic Earth. But when she’s taken into custody by the Alliance, her unusual magic makes her a prime suspect for a supervisor’s suspicious death.

For Kay Walker, whose family founded the organization, there has never been any doubt that his future is with the Alliance – even if it means dealing with sarcastic centaurs and dangerous monsters in the dark Passages between worlds. But when his supervisor is murdered, Kay discovers that a research project might have been the reason, and faces the choice of whether to ignore his instincts or risk becoming the next target, not to mention digging into the Alliance’s history and memories he’d rather keep buried. And there’s something not quite right about the strange, fierce girl he arrested as a suspect.

The last thing Ada wants is to help the infuriating Alliance guard who arrested her, but it soon becomes clear that the Alliance knows too much about Ada’s offworld origins. More, in fact, than she knows herself. Now she has to choose between loyalty to her family, and helping the Alliance save the Earth – and the Multiverse – from a deadly enemy.

I love the good old traditional way of reading, but as most of the ARC's I had gotten were in the digital form, I've grown rather accustomed to reading books online or on my laptop, so my answer would be I love both forms of reading!

With the perfect weather, environment and food, any types of books appeal to me equivalently. However, I have to say that I am not used to listening to audio books, so I guess that will be my only exception.

Happy Friday!

What is your favourite kind of books?

Thank you Lola from Lola's Ramblings for being the inspiration behind this random blog post, this is a sneak peek of what my daily routine would be like (although I always seem to have spontaneous changes in plans), please do leave a comment or write a blog post instead! I'd love to check yours out! :D

Ribeye Regular

~Waking up and breakfast~

Probably the hardest thing I have to do all day. I don't have a fixed time for waking up but it always involve the alarm clock. The time I wake up very much depends on the time I have to get to school -it never reaches 10am, sadly :( - But on normal school days, I would wake up at 7am (or rather lie on the bed until it's 7.30am and remembers I have an 8am class), realize it's the time to rush to school, probably skip breakfast because I don't have the time and try to be punctual. If my class starts at 9am, I would normally settle for a cup of hot milk or go to the wet market to get something "cheap" to eat. As now I am on my 3 months break but currently working as a research assistant in my school (attending labs and doing practicals all day long), I still have time to have breakfast with my friends in our favourite coffee shop before clocking in for work.

~Studying/Working time!~

Our timetable changes every semesters but normally my class would start at 8am and ends at 6pm, if we are lucky, there will be class cancellations :P -every students' dreams~. The usual routine would be attending lecturers, practicals and tutorials, and sometimes I will be the one doing the tutoring! :P When class ended, I would then have dinner with my schoolmates in one of the restaurants in the campus and hang around until 7.30pm, you can safely say that my university campus is my second home.

Before I started blogging, I always put up short reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. I am still having such practice but I would normally share my reviews to GR, Amazon, Smashwords (if applicable), Netgalley (also if applicable :P), my Facebook Page and twitter. Yep, basically all the social sites I am active in :P

What about you?

Happy Friday! :D (I'm writing this in my sweat soaked PE clothes, just came back from an intense badminton session with my friends :P) *random alert*

~ About ALL PLAYED OUT ~

First person in her family to go to college? CHECK. Straight A’s? CHECK. On track to graduate early? CHECK. Social life? …..yeah, about that…. With just a few weeks until she graduates, Antonella DeLuca’s beginning to worry that maybe she hasn’t had the full college experience. (Okay... Scratch that. She knows she hasn't had the full college experience). So Nell does what a smart, dedicated girl like herself does best. She makes a "to do" list of normal college activities. Item #1? Hook up with a jock. Rusk University wide receiver Mateo Torres practically wrote the playbook for normal college living. When he’s not on the field, he excels at partying, girls, and more partying. As long as he keeps things light and easy, it's impossible to get hurt... again. But something about the quiet, shy, sexy-as-hell Nell gets under his skin, and when he learns about her list, he makes it his mission to help her complete it. Torres is the definition of confident (And sexy. And wild), and he opens up a side of Nell that she's never known. But as they begin to check off each crazy, exciting, normal item, Nell finds that her frivolous list leads to something more serious than she bargained for. And while Torres is used to taking risks on the field, he has to decide if he's willing to take the chance when it's more than just a game. Together they will have to decide if what they have is just part of the experiment or a chance at something real.

Top 5 Spooky Settings in Disenchanted

Wethersfield, Connecticut is a town rich in history and spooky stories. When writing Disenchanted, I wanted to link to that feeling. Puritans founded the town in 1634 and because of its religious roots, Wethersfield has been connected to witches and witchcraft ever since. The atmosphere of New England style buildings and old cemeteries makes for an amazing setting in a fantasy romance where magic rules. Here are some of my favorite spots.

It's been three years since the devastating accident . . . three years since Mia walked out of Adam's life forever.

Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Juilliard's rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia's home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future - and each other.

Told from Adam's point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined If I Stay, Where She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance.

To be honest, this is the first time where I will painfully admit that the movie was so much better than the novel, I've read tons of negative reviews saying that it was just a poor replica of a sappy, clichéd young adult flick that was boring in so many levels, but having read the first book, it was everything I imagined and so much more. Needless to say I cried throughout the movie.

After watching the movie (just because Chloe Grace Moretz had portrayed a wonderful Mia, and oh god Adam was perfect!), I knew that I could not put off Where She Went for another year. If I stay did not impact my reader's life as much as I was hoping it to be, due to that I had buried its sequel underneath a pile of books, for Christ sake, I seemed to always do that!

I needed some closure and Where she went was my closure.

Life has a way of shaping you into what it wants you to be, regardless of how much you fight it.

Brantley Prescott is damaged. Scarred by a past she can’t forget. Hiding secrets she’s terrified to share. Searching for a future she doesn’t believe she’ll ever find.

Myles Franco is alone. Burdened by mistakes he’ll never live down. Fostering a deep resentment for the opposite sex. Unleashing his wrath on any girl who gets too close.

Brantley has worked behind the bar long enough to recognize Myles for what he is—a douchebag player with nothing on his mind but keeping a steady stream of girls flowing through his bed. With his messy dark hair, sapphire blue eyes, rock-solid body, and endless tattoos he’s impossible to ignore. But that’s exactly what she plans on doing.

After just one run-in with Brantley, Myles is even more determined to stick to the rules he lives by. She’s mouthy, blunt, and doesn’t back down—no matter how hard he pushes her. She could turn out be the one temptation that drags him down the path he’s been trying to avoid. He won’t let that happen.

Both are content living behind the solid walls they’ve built around themselves. Neither is prepared for what happens when their lives collide.

" I received a free copy of the book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. "

If you are looking for a perfect romance book, heck, Caught Up in You is wrong in so many ways, because this book is not about perfection, it is about finding love in imperfections. Honestly, I went into the book expecting another sappy teen romance (but I'm a sucker for sappy romances so ....:P) that I can curl up with at night, throw in a few dramas here and there and voilà! A book version of  a good old soap opera. Instead, I got more than what I bargained for.

Instead of a good laugh and some sleep, I got a box of tissue, some wet ones lying on the floor and only 4 hours to sleep before my 8am alarm. I did not expect that!

Happy Friday!!

Such a fun question this week, well I actually collected a variety of things (other than books) including CD's, movies, bookmarks and jewelleries, but I thought of posting some "weird" collections I happen to have!

Weird collection #1 - Red packets! Or as the Chinese calls it, angpau.

Since I was young, I am in love with the designs on the red packets, they have such significant symbolism to the Chinese culture that I just have to have it! What I love about red packets are (aside from the money :P), they are made using different kind of materials including paper and cloth - I really love the cloth ones - Furthermore some designs on the red packets are detailed and colourful. I collect them every year :P

You can read more about angpaos here: http://the-best-chinese-culture.blogspot.com/2010/03/ang-pao-red-envelope.html

Weird Collection #2 - Movie tickets

Hmm...I'm not sure whether I'm a waste hoarder or just an environmentalist, but I love collecting movie tickets. Since 2009, I have started collecting movie tickets because I thought by preserving the ticket I would be preserving the memory of the movie (childish I know :P) or the time I spent with my friends. I've kept the tickets from the first time I watched a movie in the cinema (It was Stardust!), to the first time I had a movie date, although the ink on some tickets had fade away :P

What's your collections?

Thanks for visiting and happy Friday! :)

Hi everyone,

Firstly, I wish you guys a Happy New Year! Today, I will be having a very special guest on my blog, previously I have done several reviews or book blitzs on children books, but I have yet to encounter something quite like this one. Absolutely eye opening and a knowledgable experience, I'm proud to be one of the Tuttle Twins' blog tour participant! Keep reading for an exciting interview with the author itself!

~About the Author~

unnamed (4)

Connor Boyack is president of Libertas Institute, a public policy think tank in Utah. He is the author of several books on politics and religion, along with hundreds of columns and articles championing individual liberty. His work has been featured on international, national, and local TV, radio, and other forms of media. A California native and Brigham Young University graduate, Connor currently resides in Lehi, Utah, with his wife and two children. Facebook * Twitter

~The Interview~

Hello! I’m honored to have you on my blog today, I’ve read an eBook copy of your book and it was definitely something different, not quite like the other young children’s books I have encountered, what was the inspiration behind it?

I'm the father of two young children and a passionate advocate of liberty. I've written books for adults but hadn't really encountered any material that teaches the same concepts to kids. I wanted something to help my own kids learn about these ideas, and certainly wanted to help other parents teach their children as well, so the idea was hatched and a new book series was born!

I am always curious about the illustrations and artwork in graphic books and novels, how does it work? How the illustrator brings your imagination to life?

I'm extremely fortunate to have Elijah Stanfield as our illustrator—your readers should check out some of the sample pages and see how spectacular they are!

I make sure to keep him in the loop while working on the story so that he catches my vision, and provides creative feedback to make the story more expressive or easier to illustrate in a relevant and powerful way. Having him involved early on helps greatly so that he isn't frustrated by taking my story and not being able to do with it what he otherwise might like.

I love writing short stories, however I have a tough time choosing the right names for my characters. What influenced you to decide on your characters’ names? Do you think names are an influential factor in setting the mood for the books?

I love alliteration, so the "Tuttle Twins" are "Ethan and Emily" — I find that kids like it, too. I wanted a name that was common enough to not make it seems un-relatable for the average child, but unique enough that it stays in their minds. I also wanted something that would have good SEO so people searching online wouldn't have to wade through hundreds of links to find mine!

What do you hope to achieve with the release of your new book?

The book is kind of sneaky — while we're definitely reaching and teaching children, their parents are getting swept up in it as well! It's a pattern that quickly emerged after our first book, and we wanted the same thing to happen with this book. So we crafted the story in such a way as to be appealing to and informative for an adult reading along with the child.

Now for some fun questions, can you share with us one of your best fan experience?

I often do speaking events, and a few weeks ago I was in a small city a couple hours away from where I live. An older gentleman came up to me with the first book I wrote—well worn, underlined, and full of notes. He was so excited to meet me, and thankful for the book I had written. I was 29 years old when I wrote the book, and he was floored that a young guy had produced a book that had inspired him so much. It was a fun experience!

Tell us one fun fact about yourself!

I played saxophone in high school and was in a ska band for a few years—a type of fun, upbeat music that peaked in popularity in the late 1990s. I've been thinking that I should start practicing again and form a new band just to have some fun, but it's unfortunately low on my priority list as I pursue projects that are inspiring and educational, rather than just fun. :)

The Donor (The Full Novella) by Nikki Rae
Published: October 30th 2014

Casey Williams and her family are poor. Her parents work non-stop and so does she, just so they can keep the trailer roof from leaking.

They’re getting by fine enough when the headaches start. Then there’s the nosebleeds. And the inevitable doctor’s bills.

Fortunately for Casey, there’s MyTrueMatch.com: an exclusive, quick, and almost easy way to pay it all back before her parents even have to know.

All she has to do is give a man she’s never met whatever he wants from her body.

Inside or out.

The words danced off the screen like a poem, haunting and beautifully written. The Donor is a work of art,  however to label Nikki Rae as an artist would be a huge understatement, this is because she challenges the limits of originality and authenticity with a grotesque and gripping story that left the readers wanting for more.

I was extremely excited when the publisher approved my request for the book on Netgalley, I fell in love with the cover almost instantly and the blurb convinced me to delve into the book even more, but The Donor is not just another book, to me, it goes way beyond that, it is a story.

I got to it immediately after I downloaded it from the website (putting aside the book I'm currently reading) and I did not regret one second of it. For such a short novella - 116 pages to be more exact - , I certainly did not expect that I would be more emotionally involved with the characters without even acknowledging their background beforehand. The way the author narrated the book was quite unique to me. It was not arranged in a chronological order, nor it was  using flashback scenes, but the writing style was one of the huge reason (if reasons can be described with an adjective) I kept on reading.

Extracted from The Book Cove  (Blog Hop Host)
Words touch us all in different ways. Sometimes the original intent of a quote resonates so profoundly with us that it is hard to believe that another wrote it. Other times it is a single word, peculiar phrasing, or an alternative meaning regarding an event in our lives that resonates the most. I believe in the power of starting the day (and week) off with a positive thought -- and so was created A Penny For Your Thoughts. This is a weekly blog hop that will feature quotes of all kinds; classics, character, book-movie, personal, etc. The themes will range from funny to serious, but really it all depends on how you interpret it! How does this work?

  1. Every Sunday a quote will be posted
  2. Post your thoughts on your blog and/or the comment section
  3. Join up on the Linky and visit other bloggers - Linky will not be active until day of post
  4. Collect the pennies! Every week there will be a new penny to collect and include with your post
  5. In order for me to keep track of entries easily, I need your sites submitted to this form as well so that they can be uploaded to a raffle generator. This form will remain open so that you can submit links whenever you get the chance (e.g., before they go live).
  6. On the last Saturday of every month the entries from the form above (not Linky) will be entered in a drawing. You get as many entries as you have pennies for the month. Prizes will include books, gift cards, site promotion, and other bookish winnings!
  7. Have fun! Please re-post these steps so that followers understand the process.

~ My Thoughts ~

Friendship, a term so subjective that its definition differs for each and every one of us. I do agree that every friendship begins with an acknowledgement of something common between one man and another, I always get excited when I found out a stranger (soon to be friend! :P) shares the same hobbies and music as I do! But true friendship develops after there was a mutual understanding and acceptance. However, not every friendship is build on such a simple foundation, some goes deeper and way beyond the customary, some friendship started off as sworn enemies that evolved into an unbreakable bond. My own definition of a friend is someone who would care about you without any reasons or objective, but simply because they value you and cherish you in their life.

~ YAY! My first penny! ~

 Release date: November 18, 2014

~ Synopsis ~
Sometimes love only comes once in a lifetime. For some lucky people, it is possible to love again.
Melody and Jack had shared an unforgettable love story that abruptly came to an end. Melody, left picking up the pieces, finds herself alone years later, with no hope or desire to date again.  With the holiday season approaching, Melody finds it particularly difficult to get Jack out of her thoughts.
Jack isn’t sure if he’s an angel or a ghost, but his mind is set on one thing only, finding a new love for Melody by Christmas Eve at midnight.  Easier said than done, with many obstacles to tackle, Jack underestimates how difficult the task is. With conflicting emotions, Jack takes it upon himself to find a man for a woman he still loves.
With the clock ticking as the holidays approach, this charming story of finding love the second time around will have you laughing and crying, but ultimately, it will have you believing in true love.

Character Interview: Jack

Double Decker Books: It’s nice to have you here today, Jack. Can you tell us a little about your mission this holiday season?

Jack: Yes, first of all, I want to provide a bit of background. I was Melody’s husband and I died several years ago. Melody and I were very happy, planning for a bright future together. I’ve watched Melody from above and have witnessed and felt her pain as I see that she hasn’t moved on.

Double Decker Books: You mean she hasn’t met another man? Hasn’t fallen in love again?

Jack: Well, yes. But it’s so much more. The light has gone out of Melody’s eyes, her smile. She used to be happy, her smile contagious. It’s breaking my heart to see her so sad, I can’t move on until I see that Melody does.

Double Decker Books: Oh, that’s heartbreaking, Jack. I understand how hard this must be for you. So tell me, what is the plan?
