Daughter of Smoke and Bone ( Daughter of Smoke and Bone #1) - Laini Taylor
Published : September 27th 2011

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

A monster with horns and collects deceased's teeth never appealed to me as much before, but it is amazing how much a book can change me from feeling disgusted into utterly in love in a split of a second! That's how amazingly talented Laini Taylor is, and how brilliant the series is!

I have this book sitting on my shelf (catching dust) for a very long time and I am ashamed that I didn't get to it sooner! Imagine the hours and days I missed out on discussing about the epicness of the series with my fellow friends.

Nevertheless, Daughter of Smoke and Bone is definitely one of its kind, and I could list down 5 reasons why it is so much different!

5 Reasons why you should read

1. For the art loving - Karou, the main character in the story is a talented artist who takes art classes. In most part of the story, Karou always have her sketchbook with her and she even organized them using a numbering system! As if that is not enough, Laini has a whole chapter dedicated to *drawing the nude*.

2. Friendship Fever - Every great story needs a great friendship. Karou and Zuzana's friendship is the one relationship that you can easily relate to! Funny to the core, they bring randomness to a whole new level and can make you laugh at your seat.

3. The element of anticipation - Unlike most paranormal romance series, Laini kept us waiting for the appearance of the hot male lead, Akiva. Mysteriously attractive and dangerous, there is an aura of undeniable fierceness that radiates from this sexy seraphim (quickly making him one of my Book Boyfriends), I fell in love instantly. Although his appearance was brief, he left quite an imprint and he left us with the biggest cliffhanger!

4. Hell was magical - Devils are family, what the hell? But reading from Karou's point of view, I couldn't help but muster warmth and longing towards these creatures. Karou bears a depressing sense of loneliness and they are the one who became her step-family. Devils with a sweet heart!

5. Brimstone, Father of Mystery - What is so important about teeth? Most of us would just hand it over to the Tooth Fairy in exchange for a dime, could there be another use? I was eager to reveal so many secrets from the book, but of course, devilishly talented Laini would keep us waiting for more. One of my greatest motivation to keep on reading is the element of mystery and that's what I loved best about the book. Beautifully written, you'd be surprised on how motivated you are to reveal the secrets about...well...teeth.

I definitely escaped through the magic portals along with Karou when Brimstone sent her to run her (many) errands! Gothic and captivating, Daughter of Smoke and Bone just made my list of Best-Paranormal-Book-Ever-Read.

Hello everyone,

As you can see, I have been having issues with my blog as most of the photos have been deleted. The reason behind this is because I recently acquired a new smartphone and apparently I had synced my gmail account with my phone. Having just move out of the "dinosaur age", I am still exploring the functions of the smartphone. Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted the photo albums that were stored in my phone (which so conveniently linked to my blog) and so my quest to retrieve back all the photos begin. And the worst part, some posts are dated back to 2 years ago and I would need some time to work on those!

Therefore, I apologize if your visit to my blog has left you with an unhappy experience. I'm working on it!

Although I have to admit, it's pretty ironic to view a "cover reveal" post without photos in them :P And my banner is killing me everytime I look at it. Probably it's a sign for a new one!

Thank you for your patience and I hope to have this problem fixed soon!

Have a great day!

**Just something for the Valentines***

Valentine’s Day.

And my 21st birthday.

Whoop-de-doo.

Just another college day full of classes and more homework than is humanly possible.

…until Jason, my best-friend-since-kindergarten, shows up to take me out for the day.

Like old times: the two of us on a wacky adventure, playing hooky from real life. With his lopsided grin and tickets to a circus full of misfits and monsters, he introduces me to a whole new world—one full of magic and mystery—and turns my reality upside down.

Except nothing goes as planned, and we end up running through the city to find a missing siren before someone brews a love potion with her blood.

Sirens and love potions, witches and elves, and Valentine kisses. Nothing will be the same for me again.

Instant love.

As promised by the author, it's just a 100 page novella, but I never expected that the novella (she got me hooked just by mentioning paranormal romance) would be filled with a hilarious adventure and a witty heroine!

I remembered reading the book in a restaurant and the lady next to me gave me the *weird eye* because I was laughing by myself. It amazes me how one simple comment from Emma ( the female protagonist) can make me giggle like a three year old.

Despite the character's humor, I find the story plot to be really fast paced yet amusingly alluring. I was quickly pulled into the world of sirens and elfs and I couldn't resist Jason's charm ( Jason is the incredibly hot male protagonist).

True to its core, Playing Hooky is a great combination of paranormal and romance! I loved that the book was written from both of the main character's POV, giving me a chance to look at things in different perspectives! Sometimes these kind of writing could be rather disorientating, but it worked just perfectly for this book. I do enjoy seeing things from Emma's witty sense of humor, and I adore Jason's pining over Emma. A blooming romance I would say!

As for the paranormal aspect, from the blurb itself we can guess that the book is a mixture of all sorts of mythical creatures (like a circus) and that is what intrigued me the most. I liked that the author portrayed the siren to be a sad creature, siren has always been one of my favorite creatures in the paranormal world.

As if that is not enough! In this short novella the author even included a twist, leaving the readers wondering about the truth behind one of the main characters. Definitely have me vouching for the sequel!

A great read with a great flash fight in the end. Hoping for a sequel!

I would like to take this chance to thank the author, Rita Webb for kindly giving me a copy of her ebook, I never expected it to be this amazing for a short read! A big love and thank you!

About the Book

WITHOUT CONSENT is an edgy medical mystery set in south-western Ontario where a killer  is at work.  He is crafty, vicious, revealing medical technique as he excises the kidneys of women he abducts.  Doctor Claire Valincourt, recently jilted, finds his first victim and assists with the autopsy.  Relationship jaded Detective Rosko desperately searches for a killer who is on his own search.  The hunt for a perfect kidney for the terminally ill mother he tends.

Introducing Bev

What an exciting day! And a contest too!

Another release day. Today is the day my medical / police thriller, WITHOUT CONSENT, comes out. So thrilled, I’m doing the happy dance. Glad you could come and join me.

What type of dance would you do? Jive, polka, rumba, or would you be refined and do a graceful waltz?

I’m doing a rock and roll. This is the fifth book in just over a year to be published which leads me to the today’s topic.

What to do while you are waiting for the train to stop at your corner?

The first thing you need to do is decide where you are going?

Do you have a specific genre you love to write and read? Or are you like me and like to genre hop?

I guess it’s my ADD but I like to multitask and I also like to flit from one writing project to the next. Not the most effective way to get the job done but it does keep things interesting.

Usually, I have several projects in varying stages of completion. Right now, in the romance genre I have a contemporary, a medical, and a suspense manuscript nearing completion. Another medical thriller with the same characters in WITHOUT CONSENT is partially written. I have three young adult novels in progress, one of them a sequel to my paranormal young adult, GHOSTLY JUSTICE with Daria and ghost, Amanda.

Now to just get them finished. But I have been so busy with edits and promotion for the books that came out this year that my writing time has been limited. I’m not complaining. It has been an amazing time. I’m so glad I’m ADD and had so many projects to pitch once the train stopped and let me get on.

So how did my journey begin?

It started with a pitch session with Savvy Authors in the summer of 2011. I pitched my medical romance, WHEN HEARTS COLLIDE to Debby at Soulmate Publishing and that book came out in December of the same year. At the same session, I pitched two books to Lauri at Black Opal Books and she contracted me for both of them! The first, my paranormal YA, GHOSTLY JUSTICE, was released in April, the second, a suspense with romantic elements, MISSING CLAYTON, came out in July.

Then, in October, Black Opal Books published IN HIS FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS, a middle grade/ YA, adventure. This book is about a boy’s survival in Northern Ontario while he searches for his missing father.

And, now today, (I’m doing a drum roll) my medical / police thriller, WITHOUT CONSENT, is being released. Wow! What a ride it’s been.

Now to get back to writing and finishing all those other projects and pray that they also find homes.

But I’m digressing. The point I’m getting at is that while you are waiting for that first amazing contract, you need to be writing, revising, writing, revising... It’s always good when you get a contract to be able to say, “Well, if you like that one...I do have...”

And there you go, possibly not only published but multi-published.

You write, you write some more. Keep that pen moving. You take courses, learn your craft, join on-line groups, go to conferences, meet other authors, network.

Go to conferences in the genres you like to write in. There are a ton of them out there and at different prices and lengths. You can find some that are an afternoon, a day, or even a week. Remember they can be a tax right-off when you do get published.

For myself I really enjoy a good mystery or thriller so I tend to go to conferences like Bouchercon (for writers and readers), Sleuthfest, Book Passages.

Network at the conferences. You never know what will happen. For me one of the most thrilling thing was chatting with Lee Child and him offering to read my manuscript and giving me the book endorsement: “A fine medical thriller.” Now how cool is that?
I’ve met so many wonderful writers at these conferences. You don’t harass them, you chat about life and interests. Respect them and their privacy, but don’t be afraid to approach them and say how much you like their books or their characters.

Do all the prep work so that when the train stops you are ready to leap on board with your bags packed with a variety of the best you can write manuscripts.

And keep dancing. I know I hope to.

Follow Me Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Check out their blogs and join in the weekly meme fun!

Q : What is the last book that kept you up late into the night just to finish it?

So many answers to choose from, where should I start?

Most books had kept me awake at night (and the reason behind my famous morning zombie look) but the one that made me tear up so bad at 4 am is the one book that I would love and remember always!

**WARNING : The most depressingly beautiful book I have ever come across***

He’s saved her. He’s loved her. He’s killed for her.

Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn’t protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids, so he’s never stopped trying to protect her from everything else. It doesn’t matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another—Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who’s ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders Archer’s committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn’t get what she wants… And what she wants is Evan’s death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

My review : http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/230981262

I got an ARC from GR and I didn't know what I was getting into at the time! Glad that I made it out in one piece. Highly recommended!!

Happy Friday everyone! (and I can't believe it has been a year since I last joined in the FF meme!)

The Impostor, A Love Story by Tiffany Carmouche
Published : October 1st 2012

I do not know whether I should be awed by the thrilling story plot or the swooning romance. Not many authors can pull through a good thriller, especially something as nail biting as this one, but I have to admit that every ounce of my being was spooked, psychopaths are my favorites!

To properly start off my review, The Impostor will set your heart on a race, not only because you are falling for the male characters, but because the "goriness" and the "feeling of being stalked" was perfectly described that it felt real enough. With my lights on and curtains drawn, I could still feel my goosebumps, thumbs up for that!

One thing that stood out in this story is the effort the serial killer put in just to reel in his prey, disguising himself as one of the good to earn the trust of Nicole, the female protagonist (I can't reveal the name of the sadistic character as I would have given away a HUGE part of the story). I have to say it takes patience to create the perfect set up, and of course the patience and passion of the author to write the story. I had came across thrillers that seemed a little bit too rushed and that just ruined the fun.

Despite the brutal murders taking place, Alaska has been warmer than I thought! It was easy to adapt to the community there especially when we are reading from Nicole's point of view. I sympathizes her because she came from an abusive background, my heart ached for her at how she was treated before, her dreams was crushed, not to mention her bones were crushed along by her terrifying ex-husband Ronald. On the other hand, I respected Nicole because she prioritizes her daughter above all, although I wish the story would feature her relationship with her daughter more.

As Nicole moved to Alaska, she met two amazingly dashing guys who are beautiful in their own ways. Another love triangle? Well, I would admit that I love this triangle more than I should, and I could not wait to see how it turns out. That must have said something huh? Dylan Richardson, being one of my favorite character plays an important part in giving Nicole back her confidence, and I started rooting for Brad at the end of the story. The teaser was a killer! I just have to start reading the next book right away!

Of course, Nicole's best friend, Emily was one of the biggest influence in her life, every character in the story shines! The author definitely made sure of that! Even the psychopath played his role well.

An amazing read! Moving on to next book immediately!

Hello everyone,

First of all, yes! I would love to congratulate Cambria Hebert, one of my favorite author on her new book, Recalled, which is a stand alone novel. I've read her Heven and Hell series and I am amazed at her originality and creativeness, I am overjoyed when I got the chance to participate in her cover reveal.

Before that, here's the blurb :

Love or Death? A simple question really. The choice seems obvious. But. What if you never knew love, what if your life was spent just trying to survive? What if you knew your fate before you were fully grown? And then you died. And you were given another chance. A better chance. This new life depended upon one thing: your job. And so you agreed. You thought it would be simple. You thought it would be cut and dry. It never is. And now you are left holding the fate of someone else in the palm of your hand and you have to make the ultimate choice. Love or Death?

And now, for the cover :

Title: Recalled
Series: Death Escorts
Author: Cambria Hebert
Genre: Young Adult Romance with paranormal, thriller and mystery elements
Release Date: February 15, 2013
Format: Will be available in Print and Ebook
Publisher: Cambria Hebert

Death Escorts is a new series from the author of the Heven and Hell series. This series is unique because each book acts as a stand alone, meaning that you don't have to read all the books in order to understand each of them. They are all based off of the same idea (that idea being the characters are all Death Escorts) and will have some of the same characters in each book. The series is for young adults and beyond and encompasses the elements of romance, thriller, paranormal and fantasy. You will not see vampires, shifters, witches, fae or any type of those kinds of characters in this series.

Cambria Hebert is the author of the young adult paranormal Heven and Hell series and the upcoming Death Escorts series. She loves a caramel latte, hates math and is afraid of chickens (yes, chickens). She went to college for a bachelor’s degree, couldn’t pick a major and ended up with a degree in cosmetology. So rest assured her characters will always have good hair. She currently lives in Pennsylvania where she is plotting her next book.
