Chapter 2: Part I

* * * Symone * * *

Cornered by two Polars with their guns aimed, I shuddered. Was I about to meet my maker?

The facility rocked while the lights flashed one last time before they went black. I dove to the

ground and got off several rounds from my laser in the direction of my enemy. I was shooting

blind, but I didn’t want them to ax me first. Silently, I thanked the Surpass for saving my life.

Darkness surrounded me. I clicked the light on my waist holster just in time to see the group

vanish. Polars fired at them, only hitting thin air. My eyes felt like they were going to pop out of

their sockets. I gasped when someone yanked me to the side and covered my mouth.

Solace filled me when Nile whispered, “Relax, it’s me. I saw you weren’t going to make it. I

broke formation to come after you.”

Nile would risk his life for me? My heart expanded. This Kadanan truly cared about others.

He wasn’t just about arrogance and jokes. There was another part of Nile that I was now curious

about. He tugged my arm and pulled me into a room. It looked like some sort of electrical closet.

“Kill the lights on your holster,” he told me.

We both did and it was almost pitch-black. I tried to slow down my erratic breathing. We

spoke in hushed voices.

“Do you think they will find us?” I asked.

“With the lights out, we should be okay until help comes.”

“Yeah. Kadeem will come back for us once they see we’re missing.” This small room veiled

in darkness made my anxiety spike. I heard a noise and fumbled closer to Nile. In the process, I

stepped on his foot. He grunted.

“You’re a lot heavier than you look.”

I scowled and moved away from him. But he grabbed me, wrapping his arms around my

waist. I trembled uncontrollably; his arms were a comfort.

“I’m only joking,” Nile whispered. “Your shape is perfect … gorgeous. I wanted to lighten

the mood because I know you’re frightened.”

Thankfully, it was dark, so he couldn’t see my blush. His presence lessened my anxiety; I

had to admit. My shoulders relaxed slightly.

Nile held me tightly with one arm and attempted to get a signal on his telecom with the

other. “Damn it! Why am I even bothering? All electric equipment will be dead for the next

eleven hours. The only things that will work are the ones which are Gamma-cell operated, like

the beams on our holsters and time bands.”

“Can you read my mind?”

“No, I can’t right now. And I’ve had difficulty reading your mind, period.” I sighed,

“Because you said that you know I’m frightened.”

“That was written on your face. Your body is so tense.”

“Aren’t you scared?”

He was quiet for a moment and then said, “I’m trying to be brave for you.” I could

appreciate a man who didn’t always have to pretend to be macho.

“Thanks for coming after me.”

“I would never leave you to fend for yourself.”

“You can be sweet when you want to.”

“Don’t tell anyone.”

We were standing by a wall. I leaned against his chest. His fragrance was soothing. He

smelled of sunshine and cinnamon. It was very opaque, but I could almost sense his lips next to

mine. You couldn’t have told me earlier I’d be cradled in Nile’s arms. I didn’t dwell on our lips

about to touch; another noise made me whimper.

Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: October 1, 2015
Print Length: 292 pages
Publisher: Two Petals Publishing

The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses is an action-adventure story about five teen boys who are mysteriously exposed to a foreign energy source that gives them extremely heightened senses. Sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell become hypersensitive gifts that forever change the world. The story chronicles their effortless interrelations and later exposes the testing of their deep bonds. It introduces the reader to an array of supporting characters who alter the boys’ lives forever. The Urban Boys offers young and mature readers central themes of loyalty, responsibility, honesty, fear, and triumph, which become artfully integrated with cinematic-level action and high drama. The story twists, turns, and grinds through elements of paranormal and action-adventure in a diverse, exciting, edge-of-your-seat narrative!

The story’s small town of Danville Heights, a carefully crafted universe, contrasts with the dark, gloomy town of Sandry Lake, where evil abounds. Upon the boys’ mysterious incident with the energy source, they’re instinctively called to Sandry Lake to root out evil. Their senses guide them each time. However, secrecy about their mission, furious battles with evil thugs, extreme fatigue, and stress and pressure soon overwhelm the boys, but they must find a way to embrace their fate. A lurking, Dark Stranger seems to know their plight, and a strikingly beautiful, fearless girl lends way to heightened confusion. Shocking details about these two characters, and the evil antagonist, the dreaded Druth, twist and grind the story even further. Despite tension and fierce battles, will the boys hold it together long enough to fulfill their destiny?

Intriguing, intelligent, and full of action, The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses offers a memorable, emotion-packed, thrilling ride for young and mature readers alike!

For the first time, the mellow, demure Ross trusted himself to speak up, to question the mounting dissention clouding their friendship. He remembered that only a short time ago a youthful adventure took place in this forbidden milieu. A place from where tales of strange happenings, mysterious noises, and unsolved disappearances emerged, or so it was said.

And during that youthful adventure within the preserve, when confronted by that mysterious accident, they all changed, and then he changed. Somehow, the misunderstood, glowing energy that dripped from those huge leaves caused a solo ambition. And it had only gotten started on a dangerous course that would be littered with intense brutality checkered with misguided emotion and overtones of force and power - a deadly combination anxiously waiting in the wings.

As a result of this line of questioning, and while wondering what would happen to Ross’ gift, Joaquin set his intention. Only nineteen years old, yet extremely demanding, he knew he would not be able to turn back. He let go of Ross’ arm, turned away, and ran his slender fingers through his thick, shoulder length, medium brown hair. At just under six feet, his lean yet muscular frame worked diligently to contain the rising tension within, being careful not to give any indication of his next move. A black tank top tightly hugged his chest to reveal lightly tanned skin that perfectly harmonized with his long, uneven hair.

And with his hair still clutched in his hand, he closed his eyes and breathed deeply as he listened for Ross’ movements. Pacing a little, he rationalized that he was the only adequate soul who could orchestrate and command a new way of life. Surely, a concoction of domination that would ultimately gratify only himself.

Prophecy Versus Choice--Rhews on Tour

First of all, THANK YOU to Natasha for hosting me on the blog today! And a big hello to her followers! <waves>

So, Natasha asked me to come on the blog today and discuss Prophecy versus Choice—a theme which my characters explore in my trilogy, The Fulfillment Series.

It’s interesting; this topic of “free will” versus “destiny” has been discussed and pondered by humans for quite a long time. My husband and I are watching Vikings on Amazon Prime, and they often discuss “the will of the gods” (meaning the Norse gods—Odin, Thor, etc.). But some “dissenters” in the group say they believe they can outwit or defy the gods and blaze their own trail. In the Christian religion, there’s the notion of “free will” and “election” (being chosen). So, it’s clearly something we wonder about and something that spans both time and place.

In the very beginning of The Prophecy, my main character Layla is pronounced the Fulfillment of an ancient peace prophecy dating back centuries. The proclamation is vague, as they usually are: In a time of war, when the land is divided amongst the two, she, with raven black hair, purple eyes, and a special blessing from the First Ones shall bring peace.  She, from one side, shall marry royalty on the other, and peace shall reign from that day forth. Layla has always known she may one day be discovered by the Ecclesiastics, a group of religious zealots on a mission to find the Fulfillment, and she’s taken steps to prevent being discovered, like hiding her hair color and changing the color of her eyes. And yet, she’s discovered by the Ecclesiastics, whisked away from her family, and forced to live with her greatest enemy.

Throughout the novels, Layla explores this notion of destiny, while fighting battles, falling in love, and keeping two nations at bay. Is she really the Fulfillment because some ancient people decreed it hundreds of years before? Or will she become the Fulfillment if she chooses to become it? Did the First Ones (the ancient people who made this prophecy) know she would be the Fulfillment because she was endowed with special gifts or because they knew she would choose it if the path were laid before her? It’s mind boggling stuff if you sit there and ponder it. It’s as brain twisting as “if John Conner hasn’t sent his father back in time in Terminator, he would never even have been born.” LOL!

My tagline for The Prophecy is: One often finds destiny on the road taken to avoid it. It’s an old proverb, but it can tangle you up if you sit there and think about it. Let’s take Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” poem and consider it for a moment.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

If a person stands before two roads and chooses to go down the right one, did someone or something know that person would take the right path? Did that something or someone will it? Or did the person make the choice because they wanted to, without any real outside assistance?

I’m a thinker, a pondered, and a student of life. I like to watch the world and the people in it and try to figure out the motivations and passions behind why people do the things they do. My Shakespeare professor in college once said that Shakespeare constantly observed and studied human nature, and it’s part of what made his characters and plays both timeless and relatable. And that’s what endeavor to be. I want to create stories that are entertaining, with characters that are engaging, but also ask questions to feed the mind.

And that’s my choice. Or is it?

Thanks for hosting me today, Natasha! I hope your readers will join Layla in her quest to discover her true self while she also tries to stop a centuries old war from destroying three kingdoms.
