Falling Out of Focus
Author: Brynn Myers
Genre: Fantasy, New Adult, Coming of Age
Published: January 24th 2017
ⒼⓇ

•About the Book•

I was drowning, but all I needed to do was breathe.

It was 5:45pm when I decided my future. By 9:43 I was well on my way to making it all come true. At 11:16 I took the first step to make it a reality. At 11:17 I fell and found peace.

When a dream of dying actually becomes a chance to live. All you have to do is fall.

•My Review•

Rating: ★★★★

I voluntarily read and reviewed a free copy of Falling Out of Focus provided by Xpresso Book Tours and the author. Thank you for the reviewing opportunity!

Falling Out of Focus is the kind of book that transports you out of this world and into a world of its own, kind of like Alice falling through the rabbit hole but instead, you never wanted to leave.

I dived into this book with zero expectations and no clue to where the story might lead, I was caught by surprise to see that the story took a fantastical twist (I did not check the genre before requesting for a copy - blame it on the gorgeous cover!). The blurb revealed not a single snippet of the story but rather as a prelude to the main events, and this only left readers desperate to find out more.

I really loved Myers' writing, the world building was so vivid my imagination was running wild with each scene and mythical characters (a talking otter?!). Novi was a character who I was irrevocably drawn to since the start and the pull towards her character grew with each passing moment.

If you are into fairy tale retellings, particularly Alice in the Wonderland, I highly recommend you to add this to your must-read! A beautiful tale of self-discovery you'd never want to miss.

Shadows of Valor
Author: Elsie Park
Published: March 14th 2017
Publisher: Amberjack Publishing
ⒼⓇ

•About the Book•

Something dark stirs within the peaceful walls of the prosperous town of Graywall, something only the mysterious vigilante known as The Shadow can overcome. Torn between a sense of justice and a desire for revenge, The Shadow is the nobleman Sir Calan, who must use his skills to assist the Lord of Graywall.

When Sir Calan is sent to hunt down smugglers who have run rampant after the levying of a harsh tax by King Edward, he learns of a plot against the just ruler of the town, Lord Shaufton. To thwart this plot, Calan enters a pseudo courtship with Shaufton's daughter under the guise of Sir Calan, even as he wrestles with emotions stirred by the lovely Elsbeth, Lord Shaufton's niece. Elsbeth may be the only person who can heal Calan's troubled soul, but she has secrets of her own.

Rife with deceit, greed, and betrayal, Shadow of Valor is a timeless tale of honor, love, and redemption.

• My Review •

Rating: ★★★★

I voluntarily read and reviewed a free copy of this book thanks to the author and Xpresso Book Tours.

Historical fiction was never my area of expertise, aside from binge watching on movies like The Young Victoria or A Knight’s Tale, I’ve never read many books with Kings and Knights. But my recent obsession with Outlander has strongly urged me to finally dive into the genre, and so, Shadows of Valor was my first official try to tap into the world of the classic tale.

And boy, was I incredibly blown away.

I loved the worldbuilding and the characters. The Shadow reminded me of Robin Hood on an espionage mission and I was drawn to him and his background story. I love his sense of justice, and how he has somehow bonded with Elsbeth, an intelligent and kind young woman who does not realize her own worth because of the scars on her arms. It was action packed and full of plot twists, with sweet, intimate moments in between.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and so glad that I stumbled across this hidden gem! I'm definitely going to branch out more in this genre thanks to this book!

•About the Book•

Declan James was the perfect guy. He was sweet. Charming. Caring. Until he wasn’t. Fourteen years ago, his actions tore apart my family. He ruined my sister’s life and nothing was ever the same again. But now, more than a decade later, he’s back. When he walks into my office, asking for my help, I’m shocked, but nothing prepares me for what I’m about to learn. I see how far he’s gone to redeem himself and I know that he’s changed. I also know that, as a priest, he’s more off limits than ever. If I help him, my family will never forgive me. If I fall in love with him, I will never forgive myself.

Talk British to Me
by Robin Bielman
Genre: Contemporary Romance

•About the Book•

As the Dating Guy on L.A.’s top morning show, I give the single guy’s perspective on dating, love, and sex—and I give great advice. Everyone’s hooking up…well, except for me. Sure, I can get any woman I want, but I’ve got a “no relationship” clause in my contract and the only woman I want has “relationship” written all over her. Probably stamped on her ass, too. And wouldn’t I like to confirm that.

Unfortunately, she wants nothing to do with me. At all. Something about the next Ice Age might have even come up in her rebuttal. Adorable. Because she’s determined to ignore what one simple kiss proved: she wants me as badly as I want her.

Everything in me is screaming to go after her, but I’ve got a secret that I’m fairly certain will end up with her roasting my nuts over an open fire. So, job on the line? Check. Nuts on the line? Check. Can’t get her out of my head? Nail…meet coffin. But what a way to go…

Excerpt

I lean down to whisper in her ear. I can’t help it. I can tell from her body language that I make her nervous, and right now I’m a total cad, but I’m curious to see her reaction to my words. She did walk right into them. “Are you saying I make you wet, Teague?”
The trunk pops open, almost hitting her in the forehead when she balks at my question. She’s blushing, but her warm blue eyes hook me with sparks of anger. Several charged seconds pass before she speaks.
“Does it hurt? Being so full of yourself?” She turns to rummage through a small pile of clothes in her trunk. “News flash, stuck-up”—she glances at my attire, I’m guessing—“jock, you don’t make me feel anything. I’m sure there are plenty of girls in this town you can charm the panties off of with your attitude and voice, but I’m not one of them. So please do me a favor and keep your unsavory thoughts to yourself.”
Several things about what she just said hit me like a ton of goddamn bricks. That she called me a jock makes me grin. I’m wearing long athletic shorts with my collared shirt and running shoes.
She’s right about girls’ panties, but she’s the only girl to mention my voice. What would she think if I used my British accent on her? The station manager says she gets more calls about my accent than anything else.
And this bolder, more assertive, yet wholesome Teague is hot.
Don’t even get me started on her use of the word “unsavory.”
        I am so fucked.
This isn’t a random chick anymore. She works for my mom. This sweet, beautiful, genuine, fascinating girl has a last name and knows my mother.

"Witty, sexy as all hell, and addictive like no other, Staci Hart BRINGS IT with Bad Penny."
-T.M. Frazier, USA Today Bestselling Author

Bad Penny, an all-new romantic comedy standalone from Staci Hart is now LIVE!

Nothing good comes after the third date.

See, date three is the crucial point when things get real, which is exactly why I bounce out the door, twiddling my fingers at whatever poor boy I’ve left behind. Because if I stick around, one of three things will happen: he’ll profess his undying love, he gets weird and stalky, or I’ll go crazy. Like, Sid and Nancy crazy. Like, chase-him-through-the-streets-begging-him-to-love-me crazy.

Seriously, it’s better for everyone this way.

So when I meet Bodie, I figure it’ll be the same as it ever was. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t put a single string on me. Doesn’t matter that he’s funny and smart and jacked and can play my body like a grand piano. Because even though I’m built for love, love has only carved me up like a Christmas ham.

Resistance is something I can only hang on to for so long, and he has persistence in spades. But my heart isn’t as safe as I want to believe, and neither is his. And the second I ignore my cardinal rule is the second I stand to lose him forever.

After breaking my heart with A Thousand Letters, Staci Hart did an 180 with Bad Penny, I wasn't expecting it to be a RomCom with an emotional twist and I fell hard for Penny and Bodie! I'm talking about MATH kind of HARD.

And of course, this kind of hard :p
. Penny's viewpoint on relationships has been ruined after the bad breakup with her ex, she does not do commitment nor does she believes in an HEA. NO. Sex is all fun and games until someone gets too attached. That was the reason why Penny came up with the three date rule, never stick around after the third date.

Until Bodie.

Bodie was a blast from the past. Someone she never expected to see, someone she did not recognize, someone who tempted her to take a chance on happily-ever-after.

Their chemistry was off-the-charts hot! Intense, sexy and drool-worthy, I was screaming and flipping through my Kindle like a mad woman on a mission. What I loved most is that Bodie is incredibly sweet and understanding for giving Penny the space she needs to overcome her insecurities. And Penny. Oh My Penny. You are not crazy, gurl. I love that your hair is always in a striking shade, I love the crap that you spew out of your mouth (like the lips and nipples correlation) and even when you are battling Peggy, your inner alter ego, I loved your vulnerability.

I love Penny and Bodie's story, I hope you laughed and loved as much as I did too!

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Indie Saga and the author. I'm so glad for finding this gem!

Two broken hearts. Two fractured souls. A chance encounter. Can they find a way back to each other?

There are no words to describe the whirlwind romance that is Marina and Dex a.k.a "Jase". I loved every single second of their love story and probably wept too much at their history and the things that they went through.

Marina is a role model to look up to. With her non-Irish luck, she has been thrust into too many ugly situations that landed her either in prison or in the hospital, but the same luck has also landed her back into Jase's life. She hates being alone, he seeks comfort in silence, they are completely wrong for one another, but so completely right. I love Marina for her strength. To be honest, if I am ever placed in her position, I don't think I will come out of it alive. Her fiery passion for life is remarkable, so great that it thawed Jase's cold heart.

Although Jase might be an a** at first, I couldn't help but fall in love with the 17-year-old boy who wanted to protect Marina in their foster home. His bony and lanky body was a far cry from his muscular physique that was built during his time in the military, but it was his protectiveness that won me over. He does care, despite his broken heart, and it's beautiful to see the rare times when he showed his tender side.

There was so many crappy stuff happening to Marina that she's trouble walking on two feet. One may think the plot is dramatic and unrealistic, but I see it as a test of true love. UTTERLY HEARTWARMING.

Although it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I'm looking forward to reading more of them!
