Dreamland Book Blog

Reaching out to my blogger/author friends...

Hello and hope you are keeping safe during this period of time.

How is the situation in your country? Are you keeping safe? Are you under quarantine? How are you spending your quarantine time?

It is unbelievable how year 2020 started, January was filled with WW3 memes and now we're in the midst of a plague much like the one in 1920s.

As nightmarish as the COVID-19 pandemic that has been putting the entire world on halt, I am keeping sane by focusing on the positive things this outbreak had brought us, and one of them is - T I M E.

It's currently Day 28th of Lockdown in Malaysia, we have restricted movement control order in place that doesn't allow us to leave the house unless it's for essentials, and that leaves me with ample time on my hands, hence, also the reason why after a long 2 years hiatus and inactivity on my blog, I decided to restart the empire that I've built (I binged too much Kingdom these days) and also to utilize this time to read more.

If you are an old follower of mine and was wondering "where have thou disappeared to?", please read on. If you are a new guest on my blog, welcome and this is a short history of who I am and what I've been up to for the past two years.

Starting with:

 About Dreamland Book Blog (DBB)

DBB was originally named Dreamland Teenage Fantasy and was first created in June 2011 by a high school student (me!) who loves wandering around the book sphere and was absolutely captivated by the world of book blogging after stumbling across my first book blog.

However, in 2018, I've decided to rename my blog to Dreamland Book Blog because, 1) I outgrew my teen phase & 2) I started to post more content about mature reads that may not be suitable for younger readers. To avoid misleading branding, the new and improved Dreamland Book Blog is born. I was also bored with the blogger.com interface and decided to revamp the look of my blog. From 2018 to early 2019, I was primarily blogging from Dreamland Book Blog on Wix.com so you can find some posts on there too!

But, despite all the efforts I put into "upgrading" my blog, to the extent of creating a bookstagram account (@dreamlandteenagefantasy), life got in the way.

Read more about me here: About Me

Why had I disappeared without a trace?

@EvieShaffer | unsplash.com

I'd like to start this note by apologizing to everyone who has reached out to me over the past two years without getting a response.

At the end of 2018, I was undergoing a huge change in my life. After graduating from university with my new degree, I was having a life-crisis trying to decide what's next in life. I wasn't ready to be an adult (I don't think it's something you can prepare for anyway), but I made a huge decision to leave home and move to another state on my own to start something for myself.

The adjustment period was longer than expected, not only it was a new company with a whole new environment, the city lifestyle is always more hectic as compared to the islander life I've grown accustomed to at home. Trying to adapt to the new working culture and everything else in between, I struggled with maintaining my social presence & the blogger persona I've built.

It was a classic case of too many, too much, at the same time. I left home when my blogging presence was at its peak, my bookstagram account was blooming and so was my blog with the number of review requests and blog tours I joined and helped organized. I was also the vice publisher for an independent, non-profit bookish magazine that publishes once every month, juggling between "chasing after every reviewing datelines" with my "work-life", I was so saturated at one point when something ugly happened, my passion turned into an obligation.  That's the final nail in the coffin when I woke up one day and just...stopped.

I stopped blogging.
I stopped tweeting.
I stopped bookstagramming.
I stopped checking in on my accounts.
I was exhausted.

Physically, mentally and emotionally, but I have no one to blame but myself.

Priding on my youth and energy, I thought I can sustain it all. But if there's anything I learned from this, it's too much of anything is too much. (Stole this from All Time Low's lyrics).

Unknowingly, two years have passed until COVID-19 pandemic put a pause on life, and that's when I am given a gift I've wanted since 2018 - T I M E.

 So, what now?

@andrewtneel | unsplash.com

I'm doing a Marie-Kondo on my life by decluttering, letting go of the unnecessary and prioritize.

#Todolist

1. Deleted the 4,000 plus messages on my blogger's email addresses I haven't opened or read since 2018. (I just needed a fresh start...)

2. Updating the blog and decided to go back to blogger.com as my main domain (because Wix.com is a pain in the a** with its slow connectivity) so you will see more of me here!

3. Taking it slow.

Yes, I am in no haste to return back to my prime days. For now, I'd focus on posting lesser but more quality posts, joining 1-2 blog tours now and then, maybe 1-2 Instagram posts (because keeping up my bookstagram account was what draining me the most), try to interact more with authors/readers and last but not least, READING for the JOY & FUN.

Ultimately, my passion will always be reading, somewhere along the way, I lost sight of what mattered the most.

That's all from me today! I am currently working on updating all of my social sites (that includes trying to match which password is linked to which accounts), if you are interested to connect with me, please leave a comment or follow me on any of my social links below ;)

Remember, wash your hands and maintain social distancing. Together, we can kick this virub to the curb!

Hi there my favourite peeps!

It has been a long while since I posted about anything personal and I just wanted to take this opportunity to ramble about a few updates of my life!

I haven't been actively posting any reviews on my blog or on GR (that's because my reading goal for this year is only 30 books, a shame I know :( ), but I'm all about having realistic resolutions this year and this is one way of achieving it!

Nevertheless, I completed my 6 month long internship in a pastry supplier company. Although it was just an internship, my days were fully occupied and I had such a wonderful experience working there - not to mention TONS of dessert surrounding me 24/7, that must have explained the sudden increase in my weight.

But because of my internship, I hardly had any time to blog and participate in any weekly memes (bummer!), and I had stopped posting for my blog's feature "Author/Blogger of the Month" posts since March (double bummer!). I really am disappointed in myself for not being able to sustain my blog, but I do occasionally join in blog tours in helping authors to promote their newest release, I guess by doing so, it gave me a feeling that I still have a place in the blogosphere. You guys are too awesome I never contemplated to ever leave - at least permanently :P

So what am I up to right now?

I'm back home, helping my parents out with their business so I can learn a few ropes and figure out what I wanted to do with life. Graduation is not until November and I have to wait a few months before I could use my transcript for job applications (nah, I'm just using that as an excuse to stay home and avoid being an adult :p)

I'm slowly getting back on track with my reading and I knew that by being at home, I would have more time to read (yay for that!). Annnd, since my parents knew how much of a book hoarder I am, my dad converted my cupboard into a bookshelf for my books - although I do not understand why he thought that the tiny shelf could fit all of my prized collections, pssttt. :P I'm joking, I love you dad!

My awesome new DIY shelf!
He also took his amateur carpentry skills and made me a dressing table, which I really love. Seriously dad, we should start a business, hahaha!

Enough about myself, I haven't heard from you for a while, so how's life? :D

A Happy New Year to all of you!

My Blogger Diary is a new feature that I created just to share my random "escapades" and adventures as to be more active in blogging and self-fulfilled! It can be book or non-book related relating to an amazing moment or a heartbreaking incident that you are prepared to share with us :) If you are interested, you are always welcome to create a post of your own. I will be ecstatic if you could spread the feature around because I aimed to reach out to the blogging community and share our moments together, making it a happier place than it already is.

I am posting my New Year's Resolutions a little bit earlier this year, but I am excited for the new years to arrive as I am eager to start a new chapter of my life.

That looked so inappropriate, but that is how dorkily excited I am feeling! :D
As mentioned by my previous post, I will be starting my internship in early January (I'm freaking out!) and will be graduating soon in November. Due to that, I will have more free time for blogging and not-so-insane workload that will allow me to have a better balance of life and reading. Therefore, instead of creating new years goals that I always promised (not.) to fulfil, I am determined to create realistic goals for this year, and hoping as much to stick to the plan.

Merry Christmas!

My Blogger Diary is a new feature that I created just to share my random "escapades" and adventures as to fulfil my 2015 resolutions of being more active in blogging and self-fulfilled!

Good day to all of you and aren't you guys just excited? Christmas is just around the corner!

It's time for the new year, new resolutions cycle again, but this time I'm not making any promises that I can't keep ;p no longer ambitious but being more realistic!

I titled my post for today as "Highlights of My Year 2015", hoping to explain why I was MIA this year long.

So, without further ado,
Snake
2015 is such a busy year for me! In a blink of an eye, I had already completed my final year in Uni, travelled around Europe for a whole month, organized my senior prom, wrote and published my final year thesis, participated in oratory competition and so much more!

As a result of my busy schedule, I am not kidding when I say I am unable to juggle between blogging and life.

Travelled to Paris!
Being a part of the Prom Committee!

I actually won 3rd place in the oratory competition!

My Final Year Thesis - so much effort.

After 4 years serving as a scholar, I am one of the recipient of the Best scholar award!

Representing my Uni to participate in the Global Transformation Forum

And I turned 21!!
Yeap, sorry for the pictures spam!

There had been so many events and activities going on in my life that I hardly have the time to read and blog, but as 2015 is coming to an end, so is my university life. Graduation is approaching and now I am parting ways with my friends to pursue our own working careers. It is definitely hard to let go of all of the memories, but on the bright side I will be having more time to finally regain my momentum in the blogging world! At least that's what I keep telling myself to comfort my depressing thoughts.

On the other hand,

Snake

Happy Monday!

My Blogger Diary is a new feature that I created just to share my random "escapades" and adventures as to fulfil my 2015 resolutions of being more active in blogging and self-fulfilled! It can be book or non-book related relating to an amazing moment or a heartbreaking incident that you are prepared to share with us :) If you are interested, you are always welcome to create a post of your own. This post was inspired by Lola @ Lola's Ramblings (she's an awesome and amazing friend!) - I've featured her as my blog's February Blogger of the Month and you can check out her interview and guest post here.

So I have been away from the blogging world for almost a week, but not completely non-existent! Firstly I would like to apologize if I have missed out some of your replies or comments and also for my delayed reply to your emails. I have been really busy with travelling (those long hour drives) and the internet connection back at my grandparents' house were poor so I had difficulty going online.

Anyhow!

In one of the emails Lola and I had exchanged, she had mentioned that she was interested to know more about Chinese New Year - CNY for short- and I thought I would dedicate this post to her, and also to all you guys for just being here! :)

Similar to the western version of the New Years, Chinese follows the lunar calendar when it comes to counting the days of the year, and each year is symbolized by 12 different animals -2015 happened to be a goat year!- This is where things start to get interesting because this is where we get our zodiac signs from! I was born in the year of 1994 hence my zodiac sign is a dog (which explains why I behave like a dog sometimes :P). The cycle will repeat itself again every 12 years. You can read more about the 12 zodiac signs here.

Hey guys,

I will be on a one week break from blogging and work because it's the month of the Lunar New Year! As I'm back in my hometown with loads of cooking to do and tons of visitation to relatives houses, I won't be doing any reviewing or blogging related updates until Monday (23rd February) -except for Sunday, I will be doing my last Author of the Month feature for the month of February - Just writing a post to let you guys know! :D

Till then, see you guys real soon and have a great week ahead!

Some really huge CNY celebration :P

Bimasakti Regular

My random post today is inspired by a great afternoon out with my friends!

For the past few months, all of us were held up with work and school that we did not have time to properly enjoy an afternoon just hanging out and talking nonsense - because we can't take each other seriously - What started off our spontaneous escapade was a "Watsapp" message from one of my good friend, asking us out for lunch, and hell, one hour later we find ourselves embarking on an adventurous quest to find - food!
This picture of the sky, which I took in the morning itself signifies the start of a good day!
And so "Waze" decided to lead us to this vintage/castle looking building to a wonderful cafe named The Metal Box.

The view from the cafe
Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of the restaurant (I'm too shy to do so!) but we had an outdoor sitting and a garden view, how beautiful.

Croissant with sautéed mushrooms and turkey ham, coated with wine sauce.
And a chamomile tea!
All served under the sun :P
We spent around 2 hours talking (and of course, feeding our phones with pictures of the food) before we paid the bills and search for another cafe, just for desserts.

I mean, haven't you heard of the phrase :P

We ventured further and finally reached a cafe known as 7 cups and I had the most delicious waffle I've ever tasted.

I also tried this unique flavoured soda drink which is a mixture of  Lavender and Lemonade. Refreshing on a hot sunny day! Loving the colour too.

I had tons of fun spending my afternoon with my besties, friends are always a good medicine when you are feeling down and lonely.

(most left) Her name is Emily and she has a great "selfie-ing" skill :P
Being with my friends reminded me that life can be fun and simple, the smiles are effortless and that time passes too quickly when you are having fun! This afternoon made me feel as if I'm living in one of the chic lits I've always been reading about, and it's not even the weekend yet!

I wish you have a wonderful week too! :)
