My Review

Rating: ★★★★

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by InkSlinger PR and the author. Thank you so much for the reviewing opportunity!

Although this book is a part of a series, it can also be read as a standalone.

As expected of Probst's writing, once again she delivered a heartwarming story about young love and second chances.

Probst's writing has a way of tugging at your heartstrings and offset a series of emotions. The first half of the book was addictive, the readers were introduced to Tristan and Sydney who were lovers turned frenemies and were forced to work together. The underlying chemistry and tension kept me going, but it wasn't until the second half that things started to heat up.

Although Tristan and Sydney reignited old sparks, there was a giant elephant in the closet that needed to be addressed. It was angsty, heartbreaking and tear-jerking and I enjoyed every second of it.

However, I do find that the story was a little bit too dramatic for my liking where in fact Tristan and Sydney could achieve their HEA way earlier instead of waiting for 7 years. I guess that's the pink elephant in my review!

Book Details

Saving Brad (The Kennedy Boys #5)
By Siobhan Davis
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age category: New Adult
Release Date: October 2017

About The Book:

An enemies-to-lovers romance from USA Today bestselling author Siobhan Davis. Standalone with an HEA and no cliff-hanger.

Brad

I’m in love with my best friend’s girl.

She knows it. He knows it. Everyone knows it.

Faye will never be mine, but try telling that to my stupid heart.

An endless rotation of girls streams in and out of my bedroom in a desperate attempt to forget her, but nothing eases the horrid ache in my chest. Rejection isn’t anything new for me, but it hasn’t gotten any easier.

Until she reappears in my life. Like an out-of-control tornado. Storming in, all fierce and angry, ready to steamroll everything in her path. Rachel is trouble with a capital T bundled in a gorgeous, sexy, Irish package.

She pushes all the wrong buttons, and I can’t decide if I want to yell at her or kiss her.

I should steer clear.

But I’ve never been very good at taking my own advice. Especially when it comes to girls I can’t have and shouldn’t want.

Rachel

I need to escape.

To put as much distance between me and that monster so I can start living my life.

Yet, even the vast Atlantic Ocean isn’t enough to sever the connection. To allow me to forget how he’s ruined me. His hold is more than just physical. He has a vise-grip on my head and my heart, and I can’t breathe, can’t think, can’t function.

So, I do everything to blot it out.

Until he reappears in my life.

Brad McConaughey. So hot. So infuriating. So in love with my best friend.

Every word out of Brad’s mouth makes me want to throat punch him or kick him in the nuts.

But he makes me feel, and I hate him for it. A part of me might actually love him for it.

I should keep my distance, but like destructive magnets, we are drawn together.

This isn’t going to end well.

I know it. He knows it.

But we’re powerless to resist.

Guest Post:
Twice is Mighty Nice--Why I Love Second Chance Romance Novels by KD Proctor

Confession: I am a sucker for a good love story. I’ve been known to watch movie trailers on repeat just to see the couple’s chemistry light up the screen. A good enemies-to-lovers trope will do me in every time. Weddings turn me into a pile of girl goo when the person performing the ceremony shares how the couple fell in love. And hearing how a couple hit a rough patch but worked through it--ultimately reminding us that love is never easy and absolutely worth fighting for--has my undivided attention.

This is the exact reason that I not only love romance novels, but LOVE second-chance romance stories.

Yet. Romance tropes get a bad rap for being unrealistic. I mean, yes, I may not know a person who got married to some random stranger so they could earn grandpa’s inheritance. And I’ve never heard of a waiter who married the billionaire. But I personally know people in real life who have had a second-chance romance with someone they previously dated.

I bet you do too. Don’t believe me? Here are a few examples that sound like they’re right out of a romance novel, but they are very real…

My best friend had a disastrous first date that ended with her slapping the guy across the face, and she swore in front of the crowd that witnessed the slap that they’d never date--or speak to each other--again. But because of mutual friends, they ended up at the same places together. A LOT. Over time, he said, “I’m sorry,” and he ended up on her good side. She gave it a second chance, and they’ve been married fourteen years and have two kids.

Then there’s my friend who, by his own admission, was the classic romance novel definition of a player. But an old girlfriend from high school crossed his path, and that was it. They’ve been together ever since.

Or how about the friend who had one date with a guy before she moved across the country. As fate would have it years later, his job sent him to her city on a regular basis. Coffee meetups turned into dinners, which turned into a long-distance relationship before Facebook and Snapchat were even in existence. They’re now happily married and, yes, living in the same zip code.

*swoon*

This is why I love this setup in romance novels. I love the idea that a couple has a past and we learn about what it was that drove them apart to begin with. Was it something someone said (like my best friend and her husband’s inappropriate comments)? Was it life that got in the way (like the long-distance couple)? It puts us on the edge of our seat because we WANT. TO. KNOW.

If you’re still on the fence, I not only encourage you to check out my book (shameless plug), but how about some of my favorites--they may change your mind!

The East of Redemption by Molly E. Lee. This book is a bit of Indiana Jones meets Bear Grylls. With a hearty dash of steamy romance mixed in, you’ll be on the edge of your seat as Easton hunts for the same treasure that killed Rain’s father. I have no doubt you’ll be rooting for Easton and Rain to get together in the end.

Rookie Move by Sarina Bowen. I love me some hockey romance, and this one is fantastic. Add to it that Georgia, the head publicist for a hockey team, has no idea that the new player is her ex-boyfriend, Leo. What could go wrong with that set up? Buy link:

And speaking of Sarina Bowen, another one of her books is a favorite of mine. Understatement of the Year from her Ivy Years series. This is a male/male romance novel about former lovers, Graham and Rikker, who end up on the same college hockey team after Rikker transfers schools. Naturally, Graham finds out as they’re suiting up for practice. OOPS.

A Lover’s Lament by KL Grayson and BT Urruela. This is a great story of high school sweethearts whose lives cross paths when they least expect it. When Katie’s father is killed by a drunk driver--a former soldier--she’s bitter and angry. Attending therapy, Katie is encouraged to write to a solider in the Soldier Pen Pal Program. This is the last thing she wants to do, but she agrees. One of the guys on the list? Devin, her high-school sweetheart. Can we saw swoon worthy?

Unethical by Jennifer Blackwood. This story is filled of heart and fantastic one-liners, not to mention some incredible sexual tension. Payton is trying to do her pre-med program incognito, which is hard to do when (a) one of her medical school classes does a case study on the case that could put her father away for life, and (b) the ex-boyfriend, Blake, the same guy she ghosted, is in her program.

What about you? What are some of your favorite second-chance romance novels?

She always joked that one day she’d write a book about college students, never expecting that to come true!

KD lives in West Central, Minnesota with her husband and fur-kids. She likes to write fun twists on the usual tropes that we all love. Her characters are smart, funny, and always swoony. And yes. They always get their happily ever after.

My Review

Rating: ★★★★★

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of MMUTS provided by BookFish Books and the author. Thank you for such a beautiful tale of second chance romance!

You know a book is phenomenal when it leaves an imprint in your heart.

The same kind of phenomenal feeling when you are experiencing your first kiss, or in this case, the intense chemistry between Nate and Charlie. They are beyond explosive.

Charlie broke up with Nate because she wanted to shield him from pain, from having him to go through what her sister's boyfriend had to. She loved him too much - but he never knew. Nate was a player who went through girls like his personal closet just to forget the one girl he never could. Although he was a jerkface at first, I understand where he is coming from. When the love of your life "ghosted" you and cut all forms of communication as a mean of breaking up, you can never easily get over that. So when Gwen's will forced Charlie and Nate to work together for a scholarship campaign, it reopened old wounds yet also reigniting old sparks that never died.

Honestly, the writing completely caught me off guard. I never expected to be so emotionally invested in their story and the character growth was perfectly executed. The pace may be slow at first, but I loved that the author took the time to build the characters instead of rushing to the romance aspects of the story. I particularly loved reading what Gwen meant to Charlie and how her death has affected her in more ways than one, it really grounded the story and made it even more heartbreaking.

Sure they were funny moments between Nate and Charlie and the rest of the camp besties (I adore Haley!) that had me laughing out loud. At the same time, I was also sad that Charlie and Nate took a long time to find their way back to each other. They are flawed in so many ways, Charlie being paranoid and bossy, Nate being stubborn and flirtpulative(totally made that word up), but they are a match made in heaven.

MMUTS is a beautiful story of friendship, forgiveness, and love. Most of all, it proves that everyone deserves a second chance.

Tied Up in You by Erin Fletcher

Release Date: 7/10/17

About the book

Everyone says hotshot goalie Luke Jackson is God’s gift to girls, but the only girl he wants is his best friend, Malina Hall. He’s always known how brilliant she is, but now that he’s “accidentally” kissed her, he can’t stop thinking about her…or wanting to kiss her again.

Problem is, things have been a little…awkward since the kiss. Because she likes him, too? Hopefully, but even if she did, their futures—and the ridiculous schedules that come with them—are in the way. And now one of his teammates is showing interest, and the guy has more in common with Malina than Jackson ever will.

As her best friend, Jackson should get out of the way. But if there’s one thing he’s learned from hockey, it’s that you have to go for what you want, even if it means falling flat on your face. And he’s definitely falling for Malina.

Disclaimer: This book contains a hot hockey player who goes after what he wants, a super-hot, super-distracting shirtless workout, and the kind of best friends to lovers romance every girl in the friend zone has dreamed of.

My Review

Rating: ★ 3.5 hockey stars ★

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of Tied Up In You provided by Entangled Teen and the author, thank you so much for the reviewing opportunity!

Another sweet and fun read by Entangled Teen that centers around friends becoming lovers.

Although the story was fairly predictable, it had a few laughs and swoon-worthy moments that will definitely make your heart flutter. Being best friends since young, the easiness in Malina and Jackson's friendship was what made their relationship so believable and real. I loved their banter, Jackson's obsession towards Tutu's food (my favorite character - she's such a wise woman) and Malina's passion in astrophysics, they seemed like people who I'd love to get to know in real life!

However, as much as I liked the author's writing and the prospect of a friends-to-lovers romance, I wasn't as convinced about Jackson and Malina as a couple, or specifically, the turning point in which they became a couple. Maybe it's just me, but I thought things just escalated too quickly from the "accidental kiss".

Overall, a quick and cute read that I'll recommend to young adult romance lovers!

Excerpt

Tell her how you feel.

“I don’t want you to date him, okay?”

She scoffed. “Yeah. Like you have any say in who I date, Mr. Player. Okay. Let’s hear it. Why don’t you want me to date Troy?”

The truth came out before I could stop it. “Because I like you, okay?”

“What?” Malina demanded, as if she hadn’t heard me right.

My cheeks warmed. “Because I like you. Me. I like you. I don’t want you to go out with him because I want you to go out with me.” I braced myself for her reaction. For laughing. For pity. For her to run far, far away. Instead, I got more yelling.

“Yeah, well I like you, too!”

Everything stopped. My brain. My heart. My lungs. Cause of death: shock. “What?”

“I like you! Why do you think I said all of those things about you and Krista at dinner? You know I’m not a jerk! You know I wouldn’t do that out of revenge for everything you were saying! It’s because I like you and I didn’t want to see you with her!” She huffed in frustration. “God, every time you put your hand on her arm…”

“I wanted to be putting my hand on you instead!”

“Well I didn’t know that!”

“Well now you do!”

“Fine!”

“Fine!”

Just like that, with my heart threatening to explode with anger and frustration and surprise and some of the most intense desire I’d ever felt in my life, I lunged over the center console and kissed her. Hard. Not like that first kiss. Not something she could see as an accident. Not something I had to or wanted to apologize for, but a real, lip-crushing, soul-melting, heart-bursting, desperate kiss. And she kissed me back just as desperately.

STIL

Minimalism is the new black, and it's currently taking the world by storm.

I'm sure at some point you have come across the term minimalism. Whether it was hearing from a self-proclaimed minimalist, watching a viral video of a Japanese man living on three pairs of clothes on AJ+, or clicking a popular hashtag on Instagram (#minimalliving, #minimalism, or #minimalist, to name a few), you might be surprised to find that more and more Millennials are trending towards the minimalist lifestyle.

But what exactly is minimalism?

Is it simply the act of throwing away heaps and heaps of junk to make room for, well, even more, junk?

While getting rid of stuff is a crucial part of the 'decluttering' process, Colin Wright from Exile Lifestyle explained minimalism as a reassessment of our priorities, to remove excessive luxuries that don't bring value to our lives.

Well, books aren't just stuff, right?

Admittedly, with the goal of fulfilling my 2016 New Year Resolutions - to be more focused and happier in life - I have also jumped on the bandwagon to experiment and have a first-hand experience of what the hype was all about. Here's a brief snapshot of my goal of living minimally.

My first attempt at minimalism

Mission: To declutter the junk in my closet, throwing out worn out shoes, donating clothes that are few sizes too small (why I held on to those painful reminders completely baffled me) and re-organizing my wardrobe according to types and colors.

Thoughts: It took a whole lot of effort, but given the ample amount of space I have in my closet, it was a refreshing change of scenery every morning as picking out clothes to wear became less of a burden and more of a grab-and-go situation.

My second attempt at minimalism

Mission: To redesign the entire appearance of my blog, which was easier said than done considering I'm as bad at HTML and CSS codes as I am with math.

Thoughts: I got rid of tons of useless widgets, reinvented my branding logo, and now I'm finally content with the "fresh" minimalistic look I was aiming for. I've never been prouder of myself for having the courage to delete years of accumulated hard work (it wasn't as bad as it sounded) and focused on producing posts that are worthwhile. My minimalistic experience even extended to my bookstagram account where I featured a minimal-themed feed, simply because I have not many props to begin with.

My third (and failed) attempt

As much as I am trying to ease myself into adapting to a minimal way of living, I am struggling with my third attempt at lifestyle decluttering: BOOK HOARDING. Yes,like every hardcore book lover out there, I am guilty of having boxes and shelves of books that probably would constitute as an unhealthy obsession.

Minimalism might as well just be a book hoarder's worst nightmare.

Current status: I tried donating some of my older childhood favorites but failed to find the will to let go of my prized YA/NA book collections. Honestly, I don't know if I will ever be strong enough to let go.

So this brings us to a serious question, will book hoarders ever embrace minimalism?

"You cannot have a taste for minimalist décor if you seriously read books." - Linda Grant, I Murdered My Library

Seems like all hope is lost for us readers. If there is one thing about book hoarders I can relate to, it is the joy of having large bookshelves with top to bottom book shelves filled with an endless supply of books.

Isn't this the kind of heaven we all dream of? To have a room full of books with bookshelves large enough we needed a ladder to reach for a book? Unfortunately, my unrealistic fantasy has led me to realize one bitter reality: I may never have the luxury of having the money or space to build my dream library. I'm literally overflowing with books right now that I forced myself to go on a book-buying ban because I'm broke and space-less.

Therefore, are books a valuable possession, or an extensive luxury?

I stumbled upon an enlightening read on The Minimalists during my research for writing this article. The author of the post, Joshua, described how he got rid of 2,000 books and started reading more. Intrigued by the title and curious at how he managed to accomplish such sorcery, I devoured his words like a woman on a mission, until a particular quote stopped me in my tracks.

"I thought these books made me somebody. They were a part of my identity: those books were a part of me."

*Cue lightbulb moment*

When have books become a possession that owns you?

"The real value was in the words - in the action of reading - not in the physical book themselves."

Isn't that the reason why we read in the first place? To devour the words and the emotions that accompany and not to just display the books on the shelves like trophies collecting dust?

Because admit it, you are going to buy more books, you are going to have a never-ending pile of TBR, you are going to make a promise to yourself to finish reading all your books, and often times you'd feel dejected for failing. It's a vicious cycle, one that I'm sure most of us are all too familiar with.

However, with reading devices becoming the norm of today's world and e-ARCs filling up the empty storage of our Kindles instead of the spaces in our bookshelves, is this a sign that book readers are finally embracing minimalism by purchasing lesser physical books and moving towards digital books, hence shifting the paradigm of modern day readers' viewpoint of reading?

Jeff Sheldon

All over the booksphere, the debates over physical versus digital books is still running rampant with most of the readers still preferring physical books to their respective digital copies. But, it is an undeniable fact, that digital publishing is already deeply integrated into the bookish community. It is literally impossible for a book to exist without the other.

While I love the aesthetic aspects of good old traditional books (the experience of touching a book is oddly sensual), I am open to the idea of minimalism in reading as a trend for the future. In fact, I now have more books in my Kindle as compared to my physical shelf. After all, Millennials are modern day nomads. I hardly can move around with books trailing behind me now can I?

Will digital publishing dominate the literary world? How profitable can the minimalism business be where the focus is having less for a greater value? Will minimalist readers have an adverse impact on the economy? What about the impact on the authors? So many questions left unanswered, but only time can tell the future.

What I do know is that we have entered a futuristic age where the world's focus is to build faster, smaller and compact devices designed to make life easier. So it isn't really a surprise that the literary world will soon face an impending evolution.

For entrepreneurs capitalizing on the minimalism business, maybe this could be a fruit for a thought.

What are your opinions on being a minimalist reader?

WHERE I NEED TO BE
McKenna Series #3
Jamie Hollins
Releasing July 18, 2017

About The Book

When heroin stole James Foley’s wife and destroyed his marriage, he poured all his energy into raising his young son and running his auto garage. There’s no room in his life for anything else until Megan McKenna walks into his shop. He finds it impossible to resist the sexy school teacher.

After an ugly divorce, Megan lost her home, her job, and a big chunk of her self-respect. With her posh lifestyle now a memory, she starts over by indulging in an unexpected fling with a hard-bodied mechanic.

What begins as something casual turns into something meaningful. But how can their relationship survive when it’s built on half-truths?

James and Megan soon discover that being honest with themselves is just as important as being honest with each other. Only then will their relationship fire on all cylinders.

My Review

Rating: ★★★★★

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of the book provided by Tasty Book Tours and the author.

There's something about the McKenna's that always drove me to stay up past 2 am. I had that with Ewan, then Sean, and now even sweet Megan decided to join operation ruin-Natasha's-beauty-sleep.

But I wouldn't trade my beauty sleep for anything else!

Megan McKenna has always been successful, she kept up her perfect grades, never rebelled during her teenage years and married her college boyfriend. Life seemed normal, perfect and right on track -until it wasn't. Divorced, broke and left with a beat up Honda Accord, the least she could do is to fix her car, and that was when she met single dad, James Foley, a mechanic with a past. Thrown into the heat of passion, will they learn to ever trust again? Or will a single omission of the truth threaten to destroy the foundation they built?

I love Megan, she's the perfect epitome of sweet, kind and caring that you can't ever bring yourself to hate. It was heartbreaking to see how her marriage ended and how her self-confidence was taken away by her deserves-more-than-a-punch-to-the-face ex-husband, but it was also heartwarming to see how she blossomed into an independent woman who is brave enough to finally fight for what she wants. (I swear the things Niall said made my blood boil). I completely adore her!

James. I can't begin to describe how I fell in love with his character. He's far from the Stepford version of a perfect dad. He is always covered in grease and oil, overworking himself in his shop, may bribe his kid once in a while for good behavior and does not do commitment, but somehow he has rooted himself deeply in my heart. Despite his tough exterior, I'm in love with his vulnerability that made him appear to be even more manly! I loved that he is so dedicated to his work and how he always put his kid's feelings above his. If that isn't perfect, I don't know what is.

I cried happy tears while reading the epilogue, I couldn't think of a happier way to wrap up the McKenna saga, especially with the return of Ewan, Quinn, Sean and Darcy whom I loved from the previous books! Oh Sean and Darcy, their bickering never gets old!

I'll definitely re-read the series again. Although it was a bittersweet goodbye, I am so glad to be a part of the McKenna family for the past whole year! They taught me that love is nothing but beautiful - and there is exactly where I wanted to be.

P.S. Jamie, will there be a Torrid series? :p

About The Book

Emma Cooper is determined to fulfill her mother’s dying wish to scatter her ashes with Aiden Sheffield in Linx, Texas. Just one problem. Why Texas and who the hell is Aiden Sheffield? The only clue is a faded piece of her mother’s stationary. Emma imagines Aiden is a former love of her mother’s, but when she meets the beautiful, damaged stranger, she realizes her assumptions couldn’t be more wrong. He’s hot and young. And Emma is as confused as ever.

Aiden Sheffield would rather go to hell than Linx. Who does Emma think she is disrupting his carefully built life? The last thing the Marine needs is to slice open the sealed wounds of his painful past. Yet, as he gets to know the lovely Emma, a woman who manages to smile even though she’s lost everything, he changes his mind. He will not let her go to hell alone.

But neither is prepared for the devastating evil waiting for them at the end of the road. It might just destroy them.

About MK Schiller

Not knowing a word of English, MK Schiller came to America at the age of four from India. Since then, all she’s done is collect words. After receiving the best gift ever from her parents—her very own library card—she began reading everything she could get her greedy hands on. At sixteen, a friend asked her to make up a story featuring the popular bad boy at school. This wasn’t fan fiction…it was friend fiction. From that day on, she’s known she wanted to be a writer. With the goal of making her readers both laugh and cry, MK Schiller has penned more than a dozen books, each one filled with misfit characters overcoming obstacles and finding true love.
