Author Interview

Haven is described as fresh and out of the box, shattering the stigmas of the YA Paranormal genre. What was your inspiration behind the story?

Wow! I want to shake the hand of the person who described it like that.

The inspiration came in phases. First, my editor asked me to write a shape-shifter book. At first I wasn’t keen on the idea, but warmed up to it after researching German witch and werewolf lore. Give me a historical or literary tie, and I’m on it.

I went to the places in the book. I took a tour of Texas Hill Country wineries and spent a few days in a small town settled by German immigrants. Then, on a hike up Enchanted Rock, major plot points fell into place. While all this was happening, I realized the story in my head was way different than what my editor and I had talked about. I needed it to be from the hero’s point of view instead of the heroine’s.

I wanted an atypical hero, and as I thought about him and his goals and fears, an 18-year-old from the inner city streets, surviving day-to-day only by his wits and fists emerged. I wanted a heroine who didn’t need a hero, but rather an ally. And I wanted her to be off the charts tough. A heroine who could literally eat him for lunch if he crossed her. The most enjoyable part of writing this book was finding that softness inside these hardened characters.

Who was your cover designer and how did the design process come about?

This is Haven’s second cover. Initially, it was given a more traditional YA paranormal cover, but as it developed, it was clear it wasn’t a traditional book. There are strong horror and suspense elements in addition to the romance, so the new cover fits well, especially taking into account the gritty male point of view. I love the vines and dramatic look of the red, black, and white. Striking.

Haven has been garnering good reviews on Goodreads, what are your thoughts on your reader’s responses so far?

This is my tenth published book (I write adult romance under another name), and honestly, I’m overwhelmed by the response to this one. I’m grateful for every review, regardless of the rating or reception of the book, because it means someone cared enough to read my book and take the time to write a review, but man, it feels good to see so many positive reactions in these first days.

Who was your favourite character to write in Haven and why?

Petra was by far my favorite, but only because she was unplanned and not part of the original outline. Everything she did, and every word she uttered, surprised me.

Are there any particular actors/actresses that you envisioned when you were creating your characters?

I didn’t picture any specific actors or actresses when creating the characters. I do have a Pinterest board, though. ☺ https://www.pinterest.com/marylindsey54/haven-hide-from-me/

If you have a chance to go on a lunch date with any author, who would it be? What is the first thing you would ask him/her?

Edgar Allan Poe: Amazing man, amazing mind, amazing work, and I would finally find out what happened in his last days.

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on a book related to Haven in addition to an adult romantic comedy and an adult paranormal.

Any last thoughts for your readers?

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read and write reviews. Also thanks to those who are interested enough in the project to make it to the end of this interview. Readers are the reason for what I do, and I’m grateful for those who have followed me over the years and across genres and those who are reading me for the fist time. I’m grateful for you all. xoxo

My Review

Ratings: 4.5 "I'm-in-Haven" Stars

Haven was my most anticipated read of the month! I was beyond ecstatic when I was approved of an ARC and literally danced around the house because I haven't read a YA paranormal in a LONG while - SO it only made sense when I had HIGH hopes for this book, and guess what? The author freaking delivered.

OH. I haven't read a werewolf story since my Twilight days! (I'm talking about 7 years here, no kidding!) so the sense of nostalgia is strong with this one. To have the familiar sense of that world, yet being sucked into a completely unique & different setting was confounding yet interesting at the same time. Mary Lindsey was a breath of fresh air, she swept in effortlessly and brought new ideas to the shifter's genre. I won't reveal any spoilers about the book or rehash the blurb because I rather you experience it for yourself, but I do have to stress on the BRILLIANCE of the novel.

Forget Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, strong female leads are taking the bookish world by storm! I honestly adore Freddie because she's such a strong female protagonist who is more than capable to take care & stand up for herself. Paired with a delinquent with the heart of gold (and a strong sense of curiosity & protectiveness), you have a fast-paced and incredible shifter romance that you just don't want to miss. New-to-me-author Mary Lindsey has reminded me of my love for YA paranormal romance, and I'm now on my quest to hunt for more shifter romance books!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book generously provided by Entangled Teen and the author.

About the Book

Fitting in can be hard for anyone. But for Julian and Nika Adams, it’s especially challenging. Born as partial vampires, a rare offshoot of pureblood vampires, the twins have had to deceive people their entire lives—distancing themselves from their peers.

Nika desperately wants a hero, a soulmate, someone she can trust with every fibre of her soul—someone as amazing as her father. The boys at her high school aren’t impressing, but luckily for Nika, Hunter Evans has moved into the neighborhood.

Julian desperately wishes he could sever the empathic bond he has with his sister. While it was fun to experience each other’s emotions when they were kids, now that Julian finds himself pining for a girl he can’t have, sharing his feelings is the last thing he wants to do.

Excerpt

A slice of anger ran up my spine—I shivered with the strength of it. As I closed my eyes, intense, rolling hatred seared my body, tightened my muscles. I wasn’t angry at Arianna’s comment; I actually found it rather amusing. No, the anger scorching my soul wasn’t coming from me, but from Julian. And it was strong. He was pissed.

My eyes snapped to where I could feel him in the gym. He was moving away from the massive room, hopefully coming out to join me. Curiosity and concern blossomed in my chest. I really wanted to know why Julian was so angry. Although, knowing him, I did have one guess…

“I’ll work on that…” I murmured to Arianna as I felt Julian leave the gym and enter the boy’s locker room. Frowning, I wondered what the heck he was doing. His anger had spiked as he’d left the gym, not diminished. My concern heightened. I should go see what’s wrong with him.

Knowing Julian could feel me just as well as I could feel him, I tried to squelch the worry bubbling inside my stomach. I even tried sending calming feelings Julian’s way, but it wasn’t working. Whatever had him riled up wasn’t letting go; he was getting angrier and angrier.

Arianna laughed, then she started going into elaborate detail about all the dates she wanted to go on, and which boy she wanted to take on them—she had about five or six mapped out already. Tuning her out, I tried listening for my brother. I couldn’t hear him through the people and structures in the way though. My ears just weren’t enhanced enough. It irritated me sometimes that my family’s gifts were weaker in Julian and me—the two of us were much more human than vampire. But that allowed us to feel more normal than the others, and I did appreciate that fact. The limitations were just really inconvenient at times. While any of the other vampires in my family could have easily picked out the conversation Julian was having, all I was getting was low, husky murmuring. But his emotions were simmering, and that was all I needed to know.

Glancing at Arianna, I gathered all my stuff and zipped up my bag. She raised an eyebrow, but didn’t pause in telling me all about her imaginary date rock climbing with Jake McKinley. Giving her a soft smile, so she didn’t get too suspicious, I started to stand. “I’ll be right back, Arianna, I—” Dread locked up my muscles, and I halted mid-sentence and mid-stance. Fear. Julian was feeling fear now. His anger had been rising to a boiling point, but now it had shifted to stark terror, and I had no idea why. Dropping my bag to the ground, I hauled ass across the football field.

“Nika? Where are you going? What’s wrong?”

I ignored Arianna’s concern and kept running. I had to get to Julian. I could have blurred to him in a split-second, but hampering my abilities had been drilled into me since birth, and I wouldn’t go against that training unless the situation absolutely demanded it. And when Julian’s fear shifted to panic…I began to believe that the situation demanded it.

But knowing that Arianna was staring at me as I ran away curbed the desire to blur to Julian. I wouldn’t freak out my friend if I could help it. And aside from extreme panic and lingering fear, Julian was okay. Well, he wasn’t in pain at any rate.

Pulling open the doors to the gym, the metal singing in complaint at my force, I suddenly felt a rush of agony. Gasping, I paused in my step. The zing of hurt had exploded over me, almost like I’d felt it myself. I hadn’t, though; it was separate from my own feelings of fearful concern. The pain had come from Julian…and renewed anger came right behind it.

Once I was inside the gymnasium, my hearing finally picked him up. He was cursing, and there was a lot of scuffling. It sounded like he’d gotten himself into a fight. Odd. Julian wasn’t one to pick on people. But then again, if what had happened earlier in the gym to make him so happy was what I was afraid it was…then yeah, he might have started this fight.

Cursing under my breath as another bout of pain lashed Julian’s body, I glanced around the empty halls. Seeing it was clear, I sped off after Julian. In mere seconds, I was at the edge of a group of people in the boy’s locker room. They were all cheering on a couple of guys going at it in the center. Two bodies were sprawled on the tile floor of the open shower, wild punches being slung everywhere.

From the blood bond and our emotional connection, I knew Julian was amid the melee. Silence shocked me for a second as I stood on the periphery and watched my brother through the cracks in the teenagers surrounding him. He’d gained the upper hand and was straddling a senior: Russell Morrison. I watched in horror as Julian successfully landed a punch to Russell’s jaw. So many racing heartbeats thudded in the room…it was nearly deafening. What the hell?

Knowing that our supernatural strength was superior to every other kid at this school made fear cut through my startled state. Julian could seriously hurt Russell if he wasn’t careful, and with the amount of pain and anger Julian was feeling right now, he didn’t seem to be worried about being careful anymore. He was completely out of control.

“Julian!” I screeched, an edge of panic to my voice. He could not get in a fight with a pure human. He’d accidentally kill him.

My Review

Ratings: 4 Fang-tastic Stars!

SC Stephens has a vampire series?! *inserts mindblown emoji*

What an undiscovered gem! As expected of SC Stephen, her writing was flawlessly addicting as she walked us through the line between fantasy and reality through the eyes of Nika and Julian, a pair of vampire twins who are trying to find their place in the world. Although I haven't read the rest of the Conversion series, The Next Generation can be read as a standalone.

I loved every aspect of the story, it brought on a sense of nostalgia as I was once heavily addicted to anything vampires (blame it all on teenage hormones and Edward Cullen) and I finished the entire novel in one sitting. What I loved most isn't just the plot but also the bond that Nika and Julian shared, this is honestly one of the best vampire series I've read!

Fang-tastically good!

A simple but forgotten truth: Where harbingers of death appear, the morgues will soon be full.

My Review

Ratings: ★★★★★

Meg Kassel's debut novel was packed with thrill, romance and a chase unlike any other. Delve into the world of paranormal and be prepared for the rush as the author delivered a gothic horror novel that is both thrilling and chilling in this original story of ancient mythical creatures and the battle of good versus evil - featuring the harbingers of death.

Angie Dovage is a survivor of a childhood horror story that made her a victim of the rumors headlining the news. Now that she lives with her dad, next to a house with the history of a family massacre, you can't blame her for being curious when the new family in town, the Fernandezes moved in into the house that has been vacant since the tragedy. And that includes stalking a particularly handsome young man, Reece, with her dad's binoculars. But the athletic and charming teen that is slowly taking over her heart is holding back a grave secret, one that not only threatens to ruin their newfound relationship but also destroys the very people she loves - can you fall in love with a harbinger of death?

"The world reeks of death and pain, and you smell like life and joy and everything I can never have."

The author takes forbidden romance to a whole new level. I am incredibly impressed with the storyline, albeit predictable, the writing was enchanting and pulled me in from the start! I am so over forbidden romance ever since my Twihard years, but the intense chemistry between Angie and Reece was hard to ignore and even harder to not fall in love with.

Angie is an independent heroine that you just can't help but look up to. Given what she endured in her past, I loved the fact that she is discovering herself in this book and that she is brave enough to stand up for herself and own her decisions. Which brings me to my favorite character, Reece. Unlike the typical alpha male, Reece does not dictate or in any way forces Angie into making decisions that favor himself. Even when disaster strikes, he does not just sweeps in and save the day - a harbinger of death and all.

There are so many things about the book that I fell in love with - the dynamics of Angie's friendship with Deno and Lacey, Angie's relationship with her father, uncovering the mystery behind the ancient curse and the whole idea of beekeepers and harbingers, it was the ending that made me almost cried happy tears. From the start to the finish line, it was definitely a helluva roller coaster!

Thank you Entangled Teen and the author for the reviewing opportunity! I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.
