The Funeral Flower
Michelle Jester
Publication date: June 20th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

About The Book

Devastated by the death of her grandfather, six-year-old Kelly Rodgers barely manages to cope with the profound loss. Already facing issues at school, she finds herself spiraling deeper into despair, when a fateful interaction through the fence in her backyard gives her hope. In the years following, Kelly realizes that life’s tragedies can be dealt with through acceptance; until another series of agonizing events leaves her heart in pieces.

Finding herself thrown into new surroundings, Kelly embraces her life and resolves to never fall in love. That decision is easy to keep until her junior year when she is drawn by an unavoidable attraction to the new guy, tormented James Delaney. The moment he looks up at her and smiles, her body betrays her. And he notices. She is determined to avoid him, but soon Kelly is forced to face the inevitable truth: She doesn’t want to avoid James… and he won’t let her.

Even though tragedy always follows love.

This book is intended for mature audiences due to critical subject matter.
Note: Due to mature content recommended for Ages 17+

My Review

Ratings: 3.5 stars

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Xpresso Book Tours and the author. Thank you so much for the reviewing opportunity!

The Funeral Flower is a quick read, albeit a little too quick for my liking.

At first glance, the blurb and cover seem to be a promising read, which is why I jumped into requesting the book without a second thought. The Funeral Flower is a coming of age story that deals with sensitive issues including bullying, and while nothing is elaborately described, it may be too dark for some young adult readers out there. Though, I was enjoying myself because I got slightly emotional from the plot.

Being my first read from new-to-me author Michelle Jester, she certainly did leave a good impression in my mind and I do like her writing style. However, it was the pace of the story that bothered me. I wished that certain scenes in the book were given more thought and time in its development, it seems as if too much was happening too fast, and that was a huge bummer for me.

Overall, it was a good read and recommended to YA readers who wanted to venture into the darker corners of YA literature.

"Welcome to the dark side."

About the Author

I am a hopeless romantic (I think this is the most important thing to know about me). In addition, I live in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana with my husband and high school sweetheart. Together we have a son and daughter.

Throughout my life writing and photography have been my main creative outlets. Especially when I am stressed, I know I can go to either of those things and pour out that anxiety into something good and productive.

About the Book

Most nights, when I close my eyes, my dreams are filled with memories from my past life, the one I lived before this. I remember who I was and the people in that life, and I don't want any part of this one. Everly Hope Davis isn't who I want to be, but she's who I am. In the beginning I fought against her and everything in her world, but it's impossible to hate something when you're living it every day, when the people involved make it a life worth living. I'm trying to make the best of it now, but deep down I know this life isn't mine.

About The Book

Love curses don’t exist. At least that’s what Jonas, master of the meaningless hookup, tells himself when a letter warns him he’s an Eros Guardian cursed to endure a test of true love or forever be alone. His levelheaded longtime friend Cora figures it’s a revenge prank by an ex. The way Jonas stamps each girlfriend with a weeklong use-by date, it serves him right. But when an impulsive kiss between the two friends reveals potential for more, Cora becomes the target of the Groth Maar: demons sent to wipe out the Eros Guardian line. And suddenly the curse becomes dangerously real. Breaking the curse means Jonas’s biggest challenge yet. Failure guarantees Cora’s death. But success may cost him his own life…and the loss of his carefully guarded heart to the one girl far too sensible to fall for him.

My Review

Rating: ★★★★

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of The Third Kiss provided by Entangled Teen and the author. Thank you for the reviewing opportunity!

Although Kat Colmer is a new-to-me author, she swept me away with her debut YA romance novel with just a twist of mythology to spark things up!

Albeit a little predictable, I was caught by surprise at how much I enjoyed myself reading The Third Kiss and I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel. From the characters to the quirky/funny banter, the history of the curse and the romance, the story was entertaining, to say the least!

Highly recommended to fantasy lovers out there.

Just Friends
Tiffany Pitcock
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: August 1st 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

About the Book

A new spin on the classic smart-girl-and-bad-boy setup, this witty contemporary romance shows how easily a friendship – even one built on an elaborate lie – can become so much more.

Jenny meets Chance for the very first time when she is assigned as his partner in their Junior Oral Communications class. But after they rescue a doomed assignment with one clever lie, the whole school is suddenly convinced that Little-Miss-Really-Likes-Having-A’s and the most scandalous heartbreaker in school have been best friends forever. It’s amazing how quickly a lie can grow―especially when you really, really want it to be the truth.

With Jenny, Chance can live the normal life he’s always kind of wanted. And with Chance, Jenny can have the exciting teen experiences that TV shows and movies have always promised. Through it all, they hold on to the fact that they are “just friends.” But that might be the biggest lie of all.

Debut author Tiffany Pitcock delivers a spot-on depiction of first love and the high school rumor mill in Just Friends, chosen by readers like you for Macmillan’s young adult imprint Swoon Reads.

My Review

Rating: ★★★★

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of the book provided by Xpresso Book Tours and the author. Thank you for the reviewing opportunity!

High school romance cravings fixed!

Yes, I'm a huge softy for pretty covers and friends-to-lovers stories, so what if I finished the book in one sitting? It was addictive!

Before I dive into my reasons for loving the story, I just wanted to get the bad ones out because it's like an annoying fly looming over my chest. SO here goes!

As much as I adored Jenny and Chance, I didn't give it a five-stars rating because I never once viewed Chance as a bad boy, and his so-called player reputation wasn't as convincing as the story led on to be. I also cringed a little at the turning point of the story (which could easily be avoided with something as simple as communication) so I was frustrated at so many things that Jenny and Chance missed out on just because of a few assumptions. But hey, they are in high school and behaving like actual teenagers.

Now that I got that out of the way, I really bought into the whole fake friends story. I loved how effortless Jenny and Chance can make up stories of their childhood past and their chemistry was genuine and believable. I adore every moment they spent together and it made everything just fade away! Although it took them a few tumbles to find their way to each other, their story is one that will put a smile on your face.

About the Author

23. Writer. Reader. Sarcastic.

I was born and raised in Arkansas, which isn’t terribly exciting. I’ve wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. I used to sit in class and write stories in my notebooks, thinking that everyone did. It turns out, everyone didn’t. I love writing because it means I’m putting my thoughts, feelings, and soul out there for someone else to read – for someone else to feel. The fact that someone can read my words, and empathize with my characters – characters that wouldn’t exist with out me, that I created from my mind – is such a wonderful concept to me. I could happily write for the rest of my life as long as there was one person out there who was affected by my words.

Tied Up in You by Erin Fletcher

Release Date: 7/10/17

About the book

Everyone says hotshot goalie Luke Jackson is God’s gift to girls, but the only girl he wants is his best friend, Malina Hall. He’s always known how brilliant she is, but now that he’s “accidentally” kissed her, he can’t stop thinking about her…or wanting to kiss her again.

Problem is, things have been a little…awkward since the kiss. Because she likes him, too? Hopefully, but even if she did, their futures—and the ridiculous schedules that come with them—are in the way. And now one of his teammates is showing interest, and the guy has more in common with Malina than Jackson ever will.

As her best friend, Jackson should get out of the way. But if there’s one thing he’s learned from hockey, it’s that you have to go for what you want, even if it means falling flat on your face. And he’s definitely falling for Malina.

Disclaimer: This book contains a hot hockey player who goes after what he wants, a super-hot, super-distracting shirtless workout, and the kind of best friends to lovers romance every girl in the friend zone has dreamed of.

My Review

Rating: ★ 3.5 hockey stars ★

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of Tied Up In You provided by Entangled Teen and the author, thank you so much for the reviewing opportunity!

Another sweet and fun read by Entangled Teen that centers around friends becoming lovers.

Although the story was fairly predictable, it had a few laughs and swoon-worthy moments that will definitely make your heart flutter. Being best friends since young, the easiness in Malina and Jackson's friendship was what made their relationship so believable and real. I loved their banter, Jackson's obsession towards Tutu's food (my favorite character - she's such a wise woman) and Malina's passion in astrophysics, they seemed like people who I'd love to get to know in real life!

However, as much as I liked the author's writing and the prospect of a friends-to-lovers romance, I wasn't as convinced about Jackson and Malina as a couple, or specifically, the turning point in which they became a couple. Maybe it's just me, but I thought things just escalated too quickly from the "accidental kiss".

Overall, a quick and cute read that I'll recommend to young adult romance lovers!

Excerpt

Tell her how you feel.

“I don’t want you to date him, okay?”

She scoffed. “Yeah. Like you have any say in who I date, Mr. Player. Okay. Let’s hear it. Why don’t you want me to date Troy?”

The truth came out before I could stop it. “Because I like you, okay?”

“What?” Malina demanded, as if she hadn’t heard me right.

My cheeks warmed. “Because I like you. Me. I like you. I don’t want you to go out with him because I want you to go out with me.” I braced myself for her reaction. For laughing. For pity. For her to run far, far away. Instead, I got more yelling.

“Yeah, well I like you, too!”

Everything stopped. My brain. My heart. My lungs. Cause of death: shock. “What?”

“I like you! Why do you think I said all of those things about you and Krista at dinner? You know I’m not a jerk! You know I wouldn’t do that out of revenge for everything you were saying! It’s because I like you and I didn’t want to see you with her!” She huffed in frustration. “God, every time you put your hand on her arm…”

“I wanted to be putting my hand on you instead!”

“Well I didn’t know that!”

“Well now you do!”

“Fine!”

“Fine!”

Just like that, with my heart threatening to explode with anger and frustration and surprise and some of the most intense desire I’d ever felt in my life, I lunged over the center console and kissed her. Hard. Not like that first kiss. Not something she could see as an accident. Not something I had to or wanted to apologize for, but a real, lip-crushing, soul-melting, heart-bursting, desperate kiss. And she kissed me back just as desperately.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of When It's Real provided by

Let's be real.

I would never deny an Erin Watt novel no matter if it's in the YA, NA or heck, even the Non-fiction genre. The writing sings to me and that's why Erin Watt has been my auto-buy author. Without questions asked.

After the much hyped-about Royals series that was filled with angst, drama, and cliffhangers, When It's Real paled in comparison in the department. In fact, it is as cliched as it could be.

It was a fast and cute standalone with the usual a**hol-ish male rockstar and the normal girl next door. You could probably see the ending from a million miles away.

BUT. OH.

I loved it. With my heart and soul. I love Oakley Ford (yes that's his name) and Vaughn Bennett. I love how a vain pop star fell in love with a stubborn and insecure normal human muggle who doesn't know what she wants to do in life. I loved to see the transformation in both of their characters. I loved that the story truly portrayed the reality of a celebrity's world, that it isn't as beautiful as we may see on TV. I loved that despite all the fame and fortune, there's still someone real that exists in Oak, and for Vaughn to stay true to herself, to be the anchor that he needs.

It was frustrating at first - as accustomed to every Erin Watt's novel - to read about how an a** Oak could be and how they both hated each other at first sight, but that transformation, their chemistry? OFF THE CHARTS.

It's every fangirl dream come true, but dang it! Oakley and Vaughn Ford-Ever!

P.S. My Oak - because I'm recently addicted to Lauv and he's the first person I thought of *biased*
